News Summary: Refinery fire site unsafe for probes

TOO HAZARDOUS: Structural engineers have determined the damaged structure at the site of a fire in a Chevron Corp. refinery last week is too hazardous to enter, keeping investigators from looking at a pipe failure blamed for the blaze.

PIPE REMOVAL: Investigators want to get access to the pipe so that it can be removed for testing.

GAS HIKES: The Aug. 6 fire in Richmond, Calif., destroyed an area of the refinery that produces a large amount of specialized gasoline used to satisfy California's strict clean-air regulations. The average price for a gallon of regular on Monday in California was $4.07, up from $3.86 last Tuesday.
