King George High School?s third athletic hall of fame class is highlighted by a former NBA official and a current NFL offensive lineman.

George Toliver worked 742 NBA games over a 15-year span. He?s now the NBA director of D-League officials.

The 1969 King George graduate is one of four individuals who will be honored at a banquet Oct. 6 at the high school. The 1972 undefeated girls basketball team also will be inducted.

Toliver will be joined by New Orleans Saints left tackle Jermon Bushrod; former multi-sport standout Linda Morrissette?Failes; and ex-baseball, basketball, football and track and field coach Eugene Fields.

Before he became an NBA official, Toliver was a basketball star at King George and James Madison University. He was a co-captain and the leading scorer (18.1 points per game) on the Foxes? 1968?69 team that finished 20?1 with its only loss coming in the state championship game.

He departed JMU in 1973 as its all-time leading scorer (1,287 points).

Bushrod (Class of 2002) was a football, baseball and basketball standout for the Foxes, earning honorable-mention all-state honors in football and baseball. He was selected in the fourth round of the 2007 draft by the Saints after a standout career at Towson University.

He was the Saints? starting left tackle during their 2009 Super Bowl-winning season. He earned a bid to the Pro Bowl for the first time last season, and is entering his fourth year as a starter.

Morrissette?Failes, a 1973 King George grad, played basketball, softball and field hockey and performed gymnastics for the Foxes. She was a member of the 1972 basketball team that finished 14?0 and won a regional championship. She went on to JMU, where she played lacrosse for two seasons and participated in track and field one year.

She was the golf coach at Spotswood High School for 29 years, and has been the tennis coach the past 30 seasons. She earned 205 golf wins and five district championships, and was named the Virginia High School Coaches Association coach of the year in 2002.

Her 405 tennis victories are second-highest in Virginia High School League history. She has guided Spotswood to 17 district titles (13 straight), four regional championships and one state title. She was named Mid-Atlantic Region coach of the year this past season.

Fields coached the 1968 Ralph Bunche High School baseball team to the state championship game, where it suffered its only loss that season. He also guided Ralph Bunche?s 1967 track team to a district championship. Fields was instrumental in helping Ralph Bunche and King George transition when the schools integrated in 1968.

EX-AREA STARS AT FUMA
Former Courtland standout offensive lineman Jonathan Burton has transitioned well to his first semester at Fork Union Military Academy, veteran coach John Shuman said.

Shuman said Burton (6-foot-7, 301 pounds) doesn?t yet have a scholarship offer, but he?s receiving interest from Syracuse University, among other programs.

Shuman said he?s excited about Burton because he has never coached a player his size who hadn?t signed with or committed to a college.

?He has very good talent, good mobility, good feet,? Shuman said. ?He?s stronger than what I thought he was going to be. We?ve already talked to Syracuse and a couple of other schools about him. that needs good tackles. He is looking like a good Division I-A prospect at this time.?

Former Louisa starting quarterback Kire Worley is also enrolled at FUMA, Shuman said. Worley started at Louisa as a sophomore and junior before he finished his career at Hermitage High in Richmond. Worley committed to the University of Richmond in 2011, but didn?t sign a national letter of intent with the Spiders.

Portland Opera holds free chorus rehearsal in Director Park ...

If you like opera choruses -- and who doesn't? -- get to Director Park in downtown Portland Sunday afternoon, Sept. 9. The loud and lusty Portland Opera Chorus will hold forth at its annual outdoor rehearsal.

Opera choruses are among the liveliest music written -- think the "Anvil Chorus" from "Il Trovatore," the enormous swell of voices in "Aida," the "Brindisi" drinking chorus in "La Traviata."

The rehearsal goes from 3 to 5 p.m., Sept. 9. Director Park is behind the Fox Tower, between S.W. Taylor and Yamhill and 9th and Park.

Interim Assistant Conductor & Chorus Master Michelle Alexander will lead the 65-voice group.

Teambuilding exercises often get a bad rap as a waste of employees? time, but some entrepreneurs are finding value in activities that are tailored to resolve specific challenges in their business.?Designed correctly, teambuilding programs can strengthen unraveling employee relationships, help sustain corporate culture during periods of fast growth, and build morale amid layoffs, human-resource experts say.?

?People have a negative association with teambuilding ? they want to roll their eyes,? says Stella Grizont, founder of Woopaah, a New York firm that develops creative activities to help companies solve HR problems. ?But when we?re playing, we?re automatically in a (more open) state, and you see a different side of a person that you don?t see at your job.?

Here are three entrepreneurs who used innovative and entertaining teambuilding exercises to solve their workplace dilemmas:

Challenge: Despite having only 10 employees, SheFinds Media, creator of New York-based shopping sites, needed to resolve misunderstandings between departments. ?We have an editorial staff and our marketing and sales staff?[the editorial] group is very introverted and the other is extroverted,? explains Michelle Madhok, who started the company in 2004. ?There?s a conflict over personality style.?

Exercise: The staff tried several games to improve relations between the two departments. First, they did a blind taste test of different foods to create trust. Then, they confronted their fears by smashing clay pots on which they had written about what was holding them back both at work and in their personal life. Finally, workers changed into white jumpsuits and threw paint on one another. ?It made people more emotional and vulnerable,? The game lasts a few hours, and then the correct answers are revealed. ?It?s a mega version of one of those party icebreakers,? Mulliken says. ?We ran it almost like speed-dating,? Mulliken says. ?It worked phenomenally well, and we?ve continued to do it every couple of months.??

Expert advice: This kind of exercise can help workers get to know each other, Mishra says. But it?s best to ask employees to mention favorite hobbies, travel spots or other general information. ?One risk of this company?s approach is that some of the personal information that could be shared could be quite sensitive,? Through three weeks, the magnitude of the games continues to invade the brains of folks who should be able to get the spot right and mark of penalties correctly and not call a touchback on a punt when the ball clearly was downed in the field of play.? Networks prepare to juggle politics, weather

NEW YORK (AP) ? Television networks began juggling two major stories on Monday, still wondering whether Tropical Storm Isaac will cause them to divert a large amount of attention from the Republican national convention in Tampa.

Anderson Cooper of CNN and Shepard Smith of Fox News Channel were shifted by their networks from Tampa to New Orleans, where the storm appeared headed. It's an odd rerun for both of them: four years ago they left a GOP convention to head to the gulf region ahead of Hurricane Gustav. MSNBC was sending Tamron Hall and Lester Holt to New Orleans in advance of Isaac, and Soledad O'Brien was joining Cooper for CNN.

The major broadcast networks haven't shifted resources yet. Even before the Republicans chose to cancel the first night of the convention on Monday and compress the action into three days, ABC, CBS and NBC had not planned on broadcasting from Tampa on Monday night. Each has scheduled an hour of convention coverage over the next three nights.

"We continue to watch the storm closely and we will have correspondent coverage throughout the region," said Ingrid Ciprian-Matthews, vice president of CBS News. "We will reposition some of our resources as necessary."

Brian Williams of NBC News has taken an intense interest in the New Orleans area since Hurricane Katrina seven years ago, but there are no immediate plans for him to switch cities. NBC's coverage is augmented through its partnership with The Weather Channel, also owned by the Comcast Corp.

The cancellation of Monday's convention activities due to Isaac already forced schedule changes upon television networks. Fox News Channel is reverting to its regular prime-time schedule. CNN is rerunning a documentary on Republican Mitt Romney that first aired Sunday night. PBS had three hours of convention coverage scheduled for Monday night, but instead shifted to entertainment programming.

Throughout Monday, CNN mixed coverage of the storm with political stories from Tampa. Even when its correspondents were talking politics, the lower portion of the network's screen flashed updates on the path and wind speed of Isaac. The network has plenty of experience following multiple stories, said Sam Feist, CNN political director.

"This is CNN," Feist said. "We can walk and chew gum at the same time."

The uncertainty about the storm's path and strength made for uncertainty among Republicans, too.

"This is a difficult set of circumstances for the Republicans," said Fox's Smith, "because as this storm comes through it's going to be fighting for TV time, and newspaper headline time and water cooler talk time. The Republicans had hoped they would be able to have all of the attention of themselves for the next few days and it would appear that Isaac has thrown a wrench in that."

Networks strive, as best they can, to be fair to both parties in terms of television time around the conventions. Even with the storm, Feist said he expects the Republicans to get as much or more coverage than the Democrats, primarily because of the GOP's original plan to have a four-night convention.

Television didn't even need the convention to start to produce some fireworks on Monday. MSNBC's "Morning Joe" featured a bitter confrontation with MSNBC anchor Chris Matthews attacking Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus on Romney campaign tactics, leaving show hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski plainly uncomfortable.

We?re all conscious of breast cancer but The Eve Appeal, which funds research into gynaecological cancers, says that more than 80 per cent of women know little about the five types ? cervical, ovarian, womb (endometrial), vaginal and vulval ? partly because talking about the parts involved is embarrassing. ?And that is preventing earlier diagnosis and fewer deaths,? says Robert Marsh, chief executive of The Eve Appeal.

Over 18,000 new cases of ?gynae? cancers are diagnosed every year in the UK. That?s 51 women each day, of which 21 will die, the majority from ovarian cancer (4,373). But worryingly, the incidence of womb cancer is increasing. It is now more common than ovarian cancer and deaths number 1,937, over twice the number for cervical cancer. (Vaginal and vulval cancers are very rare.)

The Eve Appeal says it?s vital to recognise the symptoms that you should discuss with your doctor. Often they won?t be an indicator of serious illness but it could save your life.

Signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer: pelvic or abdominal pain, increased abdominal size/persistent bloating (not bloating that comes and goes), feeling full without eating much, lack of appetite, needing to urinate more urgently or more often than usual. These are common symptoms but should be taken seriously if they are experienced frequently, are persistent and have started within the last 12 months.

Signs and symptoms of cervical cancer: any unusual bleeding from the vagina particularly after sex or after the menopause (when periods have stopped), persistent vaginal discharge that is blood-stained or smells?unpleasant. Even if you have been for screening (a ?smear? test), do tell your doctor if you have any of these symptoms.

Signs and symptoms of womb cancer: this is almost always curable if caught at an early stage. Cervical screening is not targeted at detecting womb cancer. Key early indicators are vaginal bleeding between periods, or after the menopause. Generally, if you have any abnormal bleeding, tell your GP immediately.

Cooking Isn't Fun

It took me until I was 33 to start cooking dinner.

Don?t get me wrong?I was no stranger to the kitchen. I had prepared laborious, extravagant meals before, often using exotic ingredients I?d learned about in magazines. My sisters and I had bonded in the kitchen, spending visits preparing elaborate dishes together for hours. Cooking had been everything the food world told me it could be: a way to engage with a community, to travel without leaving home, to respect the local environment, to look after my own health. I nodded along with the eminences of the food world, convinced that their shared conclusion was the pinnacle of truth: Americans just don?t cook enough, and we desperately need to cook more. Our health, our civility, our culture depend on it!

And yet, even while espousing the ideals of the communal table and cross-cultural exploration, I rarely cooked dinner for myself in my 20s. Where was the fun in that? My sisters and I would groan to ourselves when my stepmother implored us not to cook Christmas dinner. (Her reasoning: It was too much work and we could just get Costco lasagna and be done with it.) But when left to my own devices, I would feed myself almost anything so long as I didn?t have to turn on the stove. If I had to hazard a guess, I?d say I cooked a meal once a week and otherwise made do with hummus and pita, or cereal, or crackers and cheese and olives. I liked to commune with the foodie writers but not enough to cook every day.

Which brings me to the dirty little secret that I suspect haunts every food writer: When you have no choice but to cook for yourself every single day, no matter what, it is not a fun, gratifying adventure. It is a chore. On many days, it kind of sucks.

I might have gone to my grave denying this fundamental truth if I hadn?t reported a book that had me living and eating off minimum wage (and less). While working at Wal-Mart in Michigan, I stocked up on bulk items, foolishly using middle-class logic (?great unit price!?) instead of working-class smarts (?save enough cash for rent plus small emergencies?). I soon ran out of money and found myself hungry and exhausted, staring down a pantry containing little more than flour, coconut flakes, a few scraggly vegetables, and two frozen chicken thighs. There was nothing about this scene that inspired me to cook. The ingredients were boring. There were no friends bringing over bottles of wine. I had left my glossy food magazines in New York.

But there would be no calling Papa John?s for pizza or stopping at Trader Joe?s for premade lasagna or a selection of fine cheeses; my $8.10 an hour precluded that. I had two choices: consume raw flour and cauliflower, or cook. By dint of my newfound poverty, I had lost the third option?the escape hatch, really?that most middle-class people take for granted: eating without having to cook. Once subjected to the tyranny of necessity, I found that making my meals from scratch wasn?t glamorous at all.

There are many good reasons to cook meals from scratch. Cooking simply at home from whole ingredients is often cheaper, per serving, than heading out to a restaurant?even a fast-food restaurant. Food made at home usually has far less salt and fat than either processed foods or what?s on offer in eateries. And, contrary to popular belief, families don?t save much time by turning to box meals like Hamburger Helper rather than cooking entirely from scratch. Researchers at UCLA found that, whether using processed foods or whole ingredients, American families spend about 52 minutes preparing their dinner every night.
