Long Beach, CA?The UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team remains on the road this week as the Highlanders travel to The Pyramid at Long Beach State for a 4:05 pm PT tip on Saturday.
UCR is coming off of another close loss, as they came back from a 15-point deficit Wednesday at UC Irvine, only to watch the Anteaters escape with a four-point victory, 52-48 (box score/recap). Junior Chris Harriel posted his first career double-double for the Highlanders in the game with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
UC Riverside shot just 29.8 percent from the field at Irvine, which continued an all or nothing pattern for the team's offense?Since conference play began, the Highlanders have shot 50 percent or better on seven occasions, and 40 percent or worse on five occasions. But at no time have they shot between 40 to 50 percent.
Harriel is averaging 10.9 points per game on the season?one of three players on the team averaging 10.0 or more points per game. The others are junior Chris Patton (13.3) and freshman Josh Fox (10.0).
Long Beach State enters the game in first place in the Big West with an 11-2 record and a two-and-a-half game lead over second place Pacific. A win over the Highlanders would put the 49ers one step closer to clinching the number one seed in this year's conference tournament.
Both of Long Beach State's Big West defeats this year have come on the road?a 79-73 loss at Cal Poly on January 3 and a 94-73 loss at Hawai'i on February 7. The 49ers are a perfect 7-0 at home in conference play.
James Ennis paces the LBSU offense averaging 17.6 points and 6.9 rebounds per game. He also connects on 49.1 percent of his field goal attempts and 37.5 percent of his shots from long distance. Two other members of the 49ers boast double digit scoring averages?Miike Caffey at 12.1 points per game, and Tony Freeland at 10.4.
The Highlanders almost beat Long Beach earlier in the season as Harriel's three-pointer with nine seconds on the clock tied the game at 75 amd sent it into overtime, but the Beach outscored UCR 16 to seven in the bonus period, to come away with the win.
UC Riverside is 10-29 all-time against Long Beach State (View all-time results). The Highlanders won three in a row, and four of five vs. the 49ers from 2008 to 2010, but the Beach has since rattled off seven straight victories.
