What is grief?

November 6, 2012 - 05:35 PM

Generally, grief is considered a response to the loss of someone or something to which a person is attached. More specifically, however, this condition represents a situation in which there is a major disruption in the patterns to which a person has become accustomed. As the patterns of interaction with a person or thing with which a person is specifically strongly bonded are some of the most powerful, the coping and adjustment period is often one with very intense suffering. This they have been when there's a loss of a spouse, a parent, a sibling, or even the loss of a home due to disaster or foreclosure.

There seem to be very specific stages to the grieving process. Most clinicians consider these to be shock and denial, intense concern, despair and depression, and recovery. However, when looking at grief to the lands of Pattern Theory, I use rather different terms. I rate this down into two steps: understanding and resolution.

It is during the understanding stage of the subject recognizes the change or disruption and attempts to understand why it happened and how it happened. It is during this period, which involves limbic-centered activity, that intense suffering will be experienced. While a person may want to believe that they are rational and control the situation, it is important to realize that this point they are predominantly using the parts of the brain that are more emotional and instinctual. They should look at this stage as being one that they will endure and ultimately passed through.

Conversely, the resolution stage is much different. At this point mental functioning will shift to the more cognitive and intelligent parts of the brain, thereby allowing them to more effectively search for and find solutions. It is at this time that hypnosis can play the biggest role. It is important to note that hypnosis as a process is centered in the more intelligent and cognitive parts of the brain. Therefore, it is not suitable for this first stage of grief, but extremely useful for the second.
