Murdoch's The Daily to let go nearly a third of staff in revamp

(Reuters) - News Corp's digital tablet magazine The Daily is letting go of 50 employees, around 29 percent of its total, as it streamlines production to focus on its most popular features.

Launched just 18 months ago, The Daily was News Corp chief Rupert Murdoch's risky bet that he could reinvigorate his news business with tablet devices like Apple Inc's iPad.

But The Daily has struggled to find its feet in a turbulent and uncertain news market, where well-established print papers have been cutting staff and going through numerous restructurings as circulation and advertising dollars shrink.

As part of the changes, The Daily's sports pages will be provided by its sister company Fox Sports and it will lose its opinion section.

The publication will move to a portrait-only orientation which it said is how the vast majority of its readers' view the pages. Video will still be viewable in landscape mode, it added.

The publication operates on a traditional subscription news model at the cost of 99 cents a week or $39.99 a year.

Editor-in-Chief Jesse Angelo said in a statement the changes would help make the title more nimble to focus on readers interests better.

"Unfortunately, these changes have forced us to make difficult decisions and to say goodbye to some colleagues who have worked hard to make The Daily successful."

A News Corp spokesman said the media giant remains committed to The Daily.

The Daily will be part of a new News Corp publishing and information company after the 60-year-old media giant splits into two separate companies sometime in 2013.

The Daily will sit alongside The Wall Street Journal, UK tabloid The Sun, the Amplified education division and book publisher Harper Collins among other units.

The larger News Corp business will house its entertainment properties including Fox Broadcast, cable networks such as FX and National Geographic as well as Hollywood studio 20th Century Fox.

About Face: Former climate change skeptic now says global-warming is man-made

Richard Muller and his daughter Elizabeth Muller in 2011. (Paul Sakuma/AP)

Richard A. Muller, a ?physics professor at the University of California-Berkeley, announced over the weekend that his much-publicized investigation into climate data has found that humans' production of carbon dioxide is causing the world is slowly warm up, a process that could speed up dramatically in the next few years.

That's what climate scientists have been saying for years, but Muller's conclusions attract special attention because of his vocal self-styling as a converted climate change skeptic. Muller criticized global warming studies for sloppy and self-serving data selection and a lack of transparency that obscured errors; he then lambasted fellow scientists for circling the wagons and calling any climate change deniers wrong. Muller says he's still upset that the American Physical Society declared the evidence for warming "incontrovertible" a few years ago in an official statement.

"We don't do things in science that are incontrovertible," Muller said in an interview with Yahoo News.

He embarked on his own investigation into the data with his daughter Elizabeth and a team of scientists three years ago. His?Berkeley Earth Surface Temperature project?attracted funding from the Charles Koch Charitable Foundation, the non-profit outfit of a wealthy businessman who denies that global warming is happening. Three years later, Muller ended up surprising himself when his research confirmed everything those same studies that drew his skepticism concluded, and then some. Muller says his study's results are more reliable than many previous ones because he intentionally avoided the data pitfalls he objected to, such as only using a portion of the global temperatures available. (He expounds on his methods here.)

Muller's study has not yet been published in a peer-reviewed scientific journal, but he says he plans to publish at some point. One climate scientist, Benjamin D. Santer, told the LA Times he thinks posting the study online and not in a journal is in "the spirit of publicity, not the spirit of science" that may do more to hurt the global warming cause than help. But Muller says he wants to get feedback on his methods and to share his results with everyone, avoiding what he sees as a secrecy and lack of transparency that surrounded earlier climate change studies.

Though Muller is now entirely convinced that the earth is warming due to man-made causes, he still expresses disdain for people who try to raise passions around the issue by pointing to local weather events, such as the drought scorching up America's Midwest right now, as proof of the phenomenon. (He attributes the drought to La Ni?a, a temporary cooling of the ocean.) Global warming's effect on local weather patterns is unknown, and even as two-thirds of the world has warmed up, another one-third has shown a gradual cooling over the past 250 years. The overall effect is a troubling global warming, but Muller has no patience for simplifications that stray from the truth.

"I'm personally very worried," he says of global warming. Muller says so far the warming has been "tiny," but that everything points to the process speeding up. "I personally suspect that it will bad."

Muller is now wading into another controversy, by endorsing the process of natural gas extraction called fracking for developing countries, which tend to rely more on coal. Coal production produces more carbon dioxide, but fracking has also drawn its share of environmentalist critics.

"I?believe the only kind of action that is sustainable is that which is profitable and fortunately we can do that, we can become much more energy efficient," he says.

PGP creator aims to keep digital communications ... - VoIP News

PGP creator Phil Zimmermann has teamed up with fellow Silicon Valley pioneer Jon Callas and ex-Navy SEALs Mike Janke and Vic Hyder to develop a new secure email, text, voice and video communications package called Silent Circle

Being able to communicate without fear of prying eyes and ears intercepting could to the letter mean the difference between life and death for journalists uncovering corruption in high places, campaigners and activists trying to make the world a better place, or undercover agents engaged in covert operations. The creative force behind so then-known email encryption software PGP had just such folks in mind when developing his latest digital security product. Phil Zimmermann has created a new suite of high-end encrypted communication products that combine with a custom-made secure network to ensure that the sender and recipient(s) are the only people able to access email, voice, video and text comms routed through the Silent Circle system.

Silent Circle is described as a worldwide encryptions communications firm that delivers a comprehensive suite of high-end private encrypted communication services for email, mobile phone, text and video conferencing. Should the contingency arise to Zimmermann, the company's development team includes fellow Silicon Valley pioneer and co-founder of the PGP Corporation Jon Callas and two highly decorated Navy Sea, Air, and Land operatives in the shape of ex Commander Vic Hyder and former sniper and Special Ops comms expert Mike Janke.

The suite is made up of four products

The suite is made up of four products, the first of which is the "Silent Phone" app which allows iOS/Android smartphone users to make and receive encrypted voice and video calls via Silent Circle's custom-built HD Network named The Circle.

"We offer a secure calling plan to provide users the ability to send and receive calls to anyone outside of The Circle," Janke explained. "For calls made inside The Circle, we offer unlimited minutes in Canada, the U.S. and Puerto Rico. It's the only app that provides amazing encrypted video/voice call on 3G, 4G or Wi-Fi so users can conduct encrypted video conferences on their iPhones during traveling. The peer-to-peer encryption uses the ZRTP protocol invented by Phil Zimmermann. Keys are exchanged on the mobile devices themselves not on a server."

Next up is the email encryption application "Silent Mail" that makes use of Zimmerman's PGP innovation and PGP Universal Server innovation invented by Callas to provide secure email via SSL SMTP to a custom-built, proprietary network. Users will be allocated a special @SilentMail.com email account, which can be set up to work with existing email customers like Outlook and Mac Mail.

PGP encryption research is, clearly, already offered by Symantec however is aimed directly at enterprise. Silent Circle has been developed exactly with security conscious individuals, human rights groups, oppressed dissidents, NGOs, special operations units, small businesses and corporations in mind.

"Today, encryption provides safe harbors from liability and prosecution as so then as being a quasi-mandate. Breach disclosure laws provide safe harbors via encryption, and this near becomes a mandate for it. Similarly, during neither SOX nor HIPAA to tell the truth mandate encryption, the requirements that they place on organizations are easier to satisfy with encryption than with other solutions. Storage encryption is now a built-in feature of Windows, Mac OS X, iOS, and Android. Communications encryption all in all lags in many areas, and it is these areas where Silent Circle focuses."

The Silent Eyes app

ZRTP research makes another appearance with the "Silent Eyes" app, a Mac/Windows VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) encryption client similar to Skype or iChat/FaceTime that offers "complete end-to-end encrypted video and voice services."

"In substance, we have created a closed-loop-system where the customer holds they encryption keys and we have no access," the company's CEO replied. "The world has accepted encryption and now relies on encryption for every facet of commerce, business and finance. Phil, Jon and I took all of the lessons learned from the past and present day law, to construct every facet of Silent Circle to be built upon protecting the users - even from a legal jurisdiction point of view."

Long time designing

"We spent a long time designing and building the network and the apps based upon lessons-learned from Phil's crypto-wars experience and from mine in the Special Operations world. During there was a lot of drama in the press at that time, the problems that dogged PGP were all related to either intellectual property, or export control. The world has changed with regards to both. Core cryptographic technologies are not inherently encumbered any more. Export control is no harder than doing one's taxes. Esther Dyson is famous for saying always make new mistakes. If we have problems, they'll be new ones, not the old ones."
"We have our fiber optic system, our entire equipment and our custom-built network in several locations in Canada. Canada has the most stringent privacy laws anywhere in the world, in this way giving Silent Circle users a progressive privacy-minded legal system with which to deal with, however laws change - we know that. So we built our system to ensure the individual devices holds the encryption keys. It forces the legal system of any country to work with the individual - not us."
"To boot, our custom-built PBX (Private -Automatic- Branch Exchange)'s are designed to allow voice and video to pass through, or rather than store anything. Any data we have, is completely encrypted and we don't hold the keys - the clients do."

Janke as well confirmed that "once data is deleted by a user, it is gone from our network as then simultaneously - we have no idea what the data is, at this stage encrypted from the users end." User activity logs are retained for 72 hours however only the date and time are recorded.

Janke revealed that Silent Circle will be available as three distinct packages. The full suite will include all four Silent Circle products, with free unlimited encrypted calls 3G/4G or Wi-Fi within "The Circle". Each user will be given a unequalled personal encrypted phone number. The cost for unlimited data and text will be US$20 per month.

The second package is the Secure Calling Program that will feature the "Silent Phone" app only, and will come with unlimited calling in U.S/Canada/PR to anyone in or out of our network for $39 per month.

Lastly, there will be a Bundled Program that includes all four encrypted products plus the secure unlimited calling plan for $55 per month.

Canada. Interesting problem. "Total Information Awareness" has some legal issues intercepting domestic communications, nevertheless as before long as they go overseas, everything is in a nutshell logged.

'Heavy skirmishes' in Syria's biggest city

With the Assad regime directing the full force of its military at Aleppo, Syria's biggest city, the Syrian government is pulling forces out of surrounding towns -- a cause for celebration among rebels there. NBC's Richard Engel reports from inside one of those towns, in northern Syria.

By NBC News and news services

Syria's military pounded a rebel-held district of Aleppo on Saturday, and a BBC News correspondent in the city reported many families were fleeing to the countryside.

"The sound of heavy skirmishing can be heard all around," Ian Pannell reported.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an opposition group, reported helicopter attacks on the central Salaheddine district of Aleppo and fighting elsewhere in the city.?

One opposition activist said he had seen tanks and armored carriers heading for Salaheddine.

The battle for Aleppo, Syria's largest city with 2.5 million people, is seen as a crucial test for a government that has committed major military resources to retaining control of its two main power centers, Aleppo and the capital Damascus. ?

While neither side has managed to gain the upper hand, the outcome of the uprising is being watched anxiously in the region and beyond, amid fears that sectarian conflict could spread to neighboring countries.?

Turkey, once a friend but now a fierce critic of the Syrian government, joined growing diplomatic pressure on President Bashar al-Assad.?

On the approaches to Aleppo from the north, Free Syrian Army rebels were in evidence, while a military helicopter clattered overhead in the distance.

One man in his forties, carrying his family on a motorcycle, said he was fleeing the fighting in Aleppo and heading to the town of Azaz near the Turkish border.?

"We are living in a war zone," he told Reuters. "I and my relatives are just going back and back and forth, trying to stay away from the fighting. We left Aleppo when we saw smoke and helicopters firing."

Syria's commercial capital has been attacked again by government forces. NBC's Richard Engel reports.

On the road south from the Turkish border to Aleppo rebel soldiers had set up checkpoints bearing the sign: "This is an FSA checkpoint. May God protect you."?

Military experts believe that while Assad's more powerful military will overcome the rebels in Aleppo and other major cities, it risks loss of control in the countryside because the loyalty of large sections of the army is in doubt.?

"Assad's forces are likely to achieve a tactical victory that will represent a setback to opposition forces and allows the regime to demonstrate its military dominance," said analyst Ayham Kamel of the Eurasia Group, adding however that the rebels were getting stronger while the military was on the wane.?

Three rebel fighters were killed in clashes before dawn on Saturday in Aleppo, the Observatory said. It said 160 people were reported killed in Syria on Friday, adding to an overall death toll of around 18,000 since the uprising began.?

Video footage provided by the Observatory showed smoke rising over apartment blocks in the city into a hazy sky on Saturday. The sound of sporadic gunfire could be clearly heard.?

Fighting was reported in other towns across Syria: Deraaa, the cradle of the revolution; Homs, the scene of some of the bloodiest combat; and Hama, where a revolt against Assad's father in the early 1980s was suppressed with thousands of deaths.?

At least 10 people were killed on Saturday when Syrian security forces went into Maadameyat al-Sham near Damascus, the Observatory said.?

Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan said late on Friday that international institutions needed to work together to address the military assault on Aleppo and Assad's threat to use chemical weapons against external enemies.

"There is a build-up in Aleppo, and the recent statements with respect to the use of weapons of mass destruction are actions that we cannot remain an observer or spectator to," he said at a news conference in London with British Prime Minister David Cameron.

Earlier, Erdogan had cheered on the rebels.

"In Aleppo itself the regime is preparing for an attack with its tanks and helicopters ... My hope is that they'll get the necessary answer from the real sons of Syria," he told Turkish TV.

Cameron said Britain and Turkey were concerned that Assad's government was about to carry out some "some truly appalling acts around and in the city of Aleppo".

In stating this week that it would not use chemical weapons against its own people, but might do so against external threats, Syria caused major international concern about its stockpiles of non-conventional weapons.?

Russia said international support for Syrian rebels would lead to "more blood" and the government could not be expected to willingly give in to its opponents.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, whose country has vetoed three U.N. Security Council resolutions intended to increase pressure on Assad, said Western and Arab nations should exert more influence on rebels to stop fighting.

Russia also said it would not allow searches of Russian-flagged ships under new European Union sanctions governing vessels suspected of carrying weapons to Syria.

The increase in fighting in Aleppo follows a bomb attack on July 18 that killed Assad's defense minister and three other top officials in Damascus, a development that led some analysts to speculate that the government's grip was slipping.

Since then, Assad's forces have mounted a strong counterattack against rebels in Damascus as well as concentrating forces for an expected assault on Aleppo.

Reuters contributed to this report.

Marcotte: Single Motherhood OK, Not Mothers ... - Fathers & Families

Is it possible for a person to be able to write but not read? ?I doubt it, but must confess that this nonsense by Amanda Marcotte raises the issue (Slate, 7/24/12). ?Hers is the third in Slate?s series spawned by a New York Times article on the hazards of single motherhood.

You remember Amanda Marcotte. ?She?s the ubiquitous opiner who, long after it was clear that no sex ? much less forced sex ? had occurred in the case of the three Duke lacrosse players falsely accused of rape, claimed that the men had ?held down? their accuser ?and f**ked her.? ?Principled observers doubted the rape claim from Day Two when the men announced that no sex had occurred and allowed police unfettered access to the premises to gather whatever evidence they desired. ?Four months after her libel, the Attorney General of North Carolina took the unprecedented step of finding the three factually innocent of any and all wrongdoing, to Marcotte?s deafening silence. ?With that fealty to intellectual honesty in mind, we can now deal with Marcotte?s decidedly tepid embrace of single motherhood.

Unlike Katie Roiphe, whose failed attempt at the same was tactfully but authoritatively destroyed by Brad Wilcox, Marcotte claims, in a blizzard of made-up statistics, unsupported assertions, non sequiturs and straw-man arguments, that single mothers ?do not necessarily choose to be single.? ?True enough; some fathers die, some go to prison, etc. ?Usually none of that is Mom?s fault, but she?s single nevertheless. ?But how many mothers fall into those categories and how many fall into the ones Marcotte carefully avoids discussing ? divorce and single-mother childbearing?

The answer is that 70% of divorces are filed by women and they do so because they know they?ll get custody of the kids. ?So in fact a lot of those mothers ? the ones without a paramour waiting to marry them ? decide precisely to be single mothers. ?What about the 42% of children born to single mothers? ?That?s about 1.7 million children per year in the United States. ?Now, about half of those have co-habiting fathers, so, though unmarried, they?re not exactly single, but that?s still a hefty number of kids who are either born without a father close at hand or have a father taken from them by the tyranny of the family court system.

And yes, those are choices made by mothers. ?Some of those choices are defensible, some marriages truly are insupportable and sometimes even the pill fails, but Marcotte would like us to believe that, in some way, women have single motherhood foisted on them by??outrageous fortune,? I assume, and of course by men. ?But whatever her actual claims, which aren?t at all clear, for Marcotte, single motherhood must be someone?s fault other than single mothers themselves.

Marcotte?s article is so strange and so nutty that it?s paradoxically hard to criticize. ?How best to convey the secondary-school triviality of it? ?Let?s begin with her naked assertions.

Most women who have children have partners they intend to stay with.

A lot of the time, much-wanted relationships fall apart.

But in a substantial number of cases, the men just quit their families.

That?s why only 41 percent of custodial parents receive child support.

Sixty-two percent of mothers parenting without a man in the house have been married, and most of the rest probably thought that marriage or a long-term commitment was in the cards.

Now, that?s not all of them, but I mention those five because they?re consecutive. ?Five unsupported claims in a row may be a record. ?Marcotte offers nothing at all to back them up and indeed, one of them is just flat wrong. ?Actually, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, 50.6% of custodial parents have a child support order, but the factual wrongness of her claim actually obscures its full inaccuracy. ?After all, men are far more likely to be ordered to pay child support than are women. ?The Census Bureau tells us that 55% of non-custodial fathers versus only 30% of non-custodial mothers pay child support and that fathers pay a larger percentage of what they owe than do mothers. ?But Marcotte knows none of that which again urges that question about writing and reading.

Then there?s her claim that ?in a substantial number of cases, the men just quit their families.? ?Really? ?Marcotte gives no facts to back up the claim and a remarkable amount of solid social science casts considerable doubt on it, but again, she? have to have read articles from the Fragile Families and Child Well-being data, Sanford Braver?s ?Divorced Dads,? much of Kathryn Edin?s work, reports from Child Trends, Brinig and Allen?s study of divorce, and countless others. ?It?s impossible to conclude that Marcotte reads at all, otherwise she?d know that fathers of all income levels, racial and ethnic categories, religions, etc., overwhelmingly desire continuing relationships with their kids. ?That?s why fathers don?t tend to file for divorce and mothers do; fathers know they?ll lose their children and mothers know they won?t. ?Divorced fathers are far more likely to remain involved with their children and pay their child support if mothers don?t stand in the way, so many of those who lose contact were shoved aside by their ex-wives and the courts that abet their every move.

In the face of much social science that disproves her thesis, Marcotte opts for baseless assertion that agrees with little but a carefully constructed anti-father zeitgeist.

Marcotte eventually gets down to grappling with the fact that the poor have lower marriage rates than the more affluent and better educated. ?According to her, that actually reflects the superiority of the poor?s commitment to marriage. ?Yes, you read that right.

Wilcox assumes that marriage success is due to commitment to the value of marriage, and because blue state progressives with children break it off less frequently, they must just like marriage more. But?a study at UCLA demonstrates he has it backwards: ?Poor people hold more traditional values toward marriage and divorce than people with moderate and higher incomes,? that is to say, they?re more ?marriage-minded?.

In the first place, Wilcox assumes no such thing. ?What he does is what so many other observers have done; he simply states that the poor tend to not get married and, particularly when kids come along, that tends to keep them poor. ?I?m perfectly willing to accept that, when asked their views on the subjects of marriage and children, the poor may tend to express more conservative ones than do the better off. ?But whatever happens in the deep recesses of their hearts, it?s what they do that matters. ?Children of single mothers don?t do as well as those of intact families because they?re children of single mothers, not because of how their mothers answer a survey. ?But to Marcotte, the reverse is true; being a single mother means that you value marriage while being married means you don?t.

In his answer to Katie Roiphe, Brad Wilcox asked a question similar to one I had asked in my review of her article.

Surely a progressive like Roiphe should be concerned about all this, rather than dismissing the recent?New York Times?news story on the marriage divide in America as a ?puritanical and alarmist rumination on the decline of the American family.? Since when is it puritanical and alarmist in progressive circles to raise the red flag about a major driver of social and economic inequality?

Given the fact that single mothers and their children are far more likely to live in poverty than are their married peers and their children, what?s a liberal/progressive doing plumping for single motherhood? ?Since the children of single mothers are much more likely than the children of intact families to remain stuck on the bottom rungs of the economic ladder, why do ?progressives? like Roiphe and Marcotte encourage women to have children without a man to help support and care for them?

Wilcox asked the question and Marcotte responded to his article, but tellingly, she failed to answer it. ?Although it?s an obvious criticism of her and her article, Roiphe completely refused to address it. ?By now, the reason should be clear ? they can?t. ?The simple fact is that the Left?s appropriate concern for the welfare of the poor and working classes is on a collision course with feminism?s disdain for fathers and marriage. ?Fatherlessness and non-marital childbearing condemn many women and children to lives on the edge. ?It?s time leftists made a choice.

But I don?t expect Amanda Marcotte to make the hard decisions required when two ?isms? collide. ?My guess is she doesn?t even know there?s an accident already in progress. ?After all, to know that would take some reading.

Thanks to Glenn for the heads-up.

Sisters' fundraising brings life-saving cancer treatment to Maine ...

Bernie Ring used to travel to Boston from his home in Sullivan at least every other week to be treated for a complication that developed after a bone marrow transplant. The donated marrow, meant to help him recover from leukemia, was attacking his body, leaving the skin around his waist and left leg thick and inflexible.

He had a difficult time walking and breathing. Regular blood-filtering treatments in Boston helped to control his body?s immune response, loosening up dead cells that were clogging his system and toughening his skin. But the time and expense of the 600-mile trip wore on Ring, and he risked his health by cutting back on treatments.

His future sister-in-law, Betty Weidner of Corea, thought other patients in Maine must be facing the same hardship. So she dialed up a number of health care facilities in the state to see if they would install the blood-filtering machine. One by one, they said no. The machine was too expensive and there weren?t enough patients to warrant the investment, she was told.

Months later, in the fall of 2011, Weidner called CancerCare of Maine, an Eastern Maine Medical Center facility located at the Lafayette Family Cancer Center in Brewer. Executive Director Allen L?Italien, after researching the treatment, made Weidner a deal: raise $40,000 to pay for the machine and CancerCare of Maine would install and staff it.

Weidner, who works as a receptionist in an Ellsworth dental office and had no fundraising experience, was undaunted. She knew a bake sale wouldn?t cut it.

?I called my sister and I said, ?We have to raise $40,000. I can?t make that many cookies!? She said, ?How are we going to do this?? And I said, ?I don?t know, I don?t know, but we?ll do it.??

Weidner and her sister, Debbie Crowley, rallied family, friends, neighbors and loved ones to their cause.

?I wasn?t real sure they could do it,? Ring said. ?In no time flat, they had $20,000 or $30,000 and I just couldn?t believe it.?

Weidner also won over Michael Crowley (no relation to Debbie Crowley), president of Healthcare Charities, the charitable arm of Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems. He agreed to pitch in and help her with fundraising materials if she continued her grass-roots collection drive.

?I was making a blind-faith commitment that if she could deliver on her end of this that we would find a way and we would deliver on our end,? he said.

Within three months, the group had raised $80,000, twice the original target. An anonymous donor in Hancock County heard about the cause and contributed roughly half of the needed funds, covering the match Healthcare Charities had promised.

The extra money allowed the group to upgrade to a version of the machine that halved treatment times and also could be used on children and teenagers.

In April, Ring became the machine?s first patient. It?s now operating at near capacity ? four other patients have the same complication as Ring, called graft-versus-host disease, and another suffers from a form of lymphoma that invades the skin.

?It cuts down on a lot of stress and travel time,? Ring said. ?I can get two treatments in less time than it took to get one day of treatment in Boston for probably a quarter of the cost.?

It is Maine?s only ?photopheresis? machine. Patients are hooked up to an IV that feeds their blood into the machine, which separates a small amount of white blood cells and treats them with a medicine that activates under exposure to ultraviolet light. The treated cells are then reinfused into the body in a roughly two-hour process that helps to bring the immune system back into balance.

?Essentially it teaches the cells to die properly, so that they don?t have that plaquing of tissue,? said Marcy Black, a registered nurse who administers the treatments.

Without the procedure, also used for other autoimmune disorders and organ transplant rejection, plaque can stiffen patients? lungs and other organs, L?Italien said.

?If they don?t do this, they?ll die,? he said. ?You can only have your skin and your lungs and the lining of your intestine fall apart so much.?

The treatment, available at Boston?s Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Massachusetts General Hospital, among other institutions, has been around for at least a decade, but more recently became widely available for a greater number of conditions, L?Italien said.

?We started thinking there was one patient in the whole region; now the machine is full,? he said.

There?s talk about raising money for a second photopheresis machine, so other patients in Maine don?t have to make the hours-long trip to Boston.

Weidner, who admits she hates asking people for money, isn?t sure she?ll take part. But she?s happy to see her future brother-in-law feeling better.

?My sister thought I was crazy,? she said, laughing.

Total sees revenue rise 10 percent in first half

PARIS (AP) ? French oil giant Total says its revenue grew 10 percent in the first half of the year but provisions and a strengthening dollar helped push profit down 22 percent.

Despite the weak economy, Total's revenue grew to ?100.3 billion ($123 billion) for January to June over the same period last year.

The company said Friday that it is cooperating with an American investigation into gas contracts awarded to Iran in the 1990s and set aside ?316 million in the second quarter in light of that probe. That provision contributed to a fall in net profit to ?5.2 billion.

The group warned that refining margins will be hurt in the second half by scheduled work on a refinery in France.

personal trainer - The #1 Problem in Choosing A Fitness Trainer

Copyright (c) 2012 Vidal Marketing

In 2011, approximately 6.5 million Americans used the services of a personal athletic trainer. Unfortunately, most of them wasted their money on trainers without adequate training. By doing this, they may be putting their health at risk, since proper exercise is necessary to maintain good health and fitness. This article discusses the most important things to consider when choosing a personal athletic trainer.

Dr. Anne Larson, the author of a new book called "Certified or CertiFRAUD: Assessing the Professional Competency of Your Personal Trainer" believes that the certification of personal trainers in many cases could be considered fraudulent. She explains in the book what to look out for and how to find a qualified personal trainer.

According to her, the problem has grown because there are now hundreds of organizations that give certificates to personal trainers. Many of these certify personal trainers who merely complete an online seminar or attend a weekend workshop. Such training does not provide the knowledge necessary to really help people who are serious about physical fitness.

'This type of certification isn't even worth the paper it is printed on," says author Dr. Larson. "This is what I refer to as CertiFraud."

According to Larson many studies show that the knowledge of a personal trainer has a direct impact on the results achieved by their clients. Since the training of most certified personal trainers is inadequate, millions of personal trainer clients are being misled and misinformed. They are wasting not only their money but also their valuable time. Many have health conditions and have a great need for a knowledgeable fitness trainer.

All the details on how to choose a qualified personal trainer, and to check out their credentials, are provided in this very important book.

Here are the top 3 things you must do to avoid hiring a trainer without adequate training: Check not only their credentials but also the details of the certifying organization, Go through an extensive interview process before hiring your trainer, and Hire the trainer for a trial period before committing to a long term arrangement.

You will also want to check your trainer's academic credentials, nutritional knowledge, specialized exercise training, insurance, and CPR credentials. You must be comfortable with all of these areas before hiring someone.

You are putting your health and well-being in this person's hands, so take some time to really check things out. You will want to understand the trainer's specific standards and proposed exercise regimen. What is their level of knowledge of exercise science? Have they kept up to date with new research in this area?

Eric Dane to Check Out of Grey's Anatomy

The halls of Seattle Grace are about to get a whole lot less steamy. McSteamy, that is, as star Eric Dane has announced his intentions to leave Grey's Anatomy.

“I am extremely grateful to everyone at Grey’s, ABC and Shondaland for the experience and memories I have had over the course of this run,” Dane told TV Line in a statement. “It has been wonderful to work alongside and learn from a creative force such as [creator] Shonda Rhimes.”

Eric Dane as Mark Sloane

Dane will stick around to finish off his character's storyline - Season 8 concluded with Mark Sloane's long-time love, Lexie, dying in a plane crash - as Rhimes said the actor "did not come to this decision lightly," adding:

"We’re a big family here at Grey’s with a long history together and Eric will always remain an important part of our family. I wish him the best and I look forward to watching him as he continues to steam up the big and small screen.”

Grey's Anatomy Season 9 premiere on ABC September 27.

This move should free Dane up with more time to film another naked movie.

Clinton to Myanmar: Keep up the reforms

Though media laws have been relaxed in Myanmar, reporting on politics or sensitive subjects like ethnic unrest are still subject to censorship.

As Secretary of State Hillary Clinton today urged Myanmar's president to continue with economic and political reforms, two newspaper editors fought media censorship battles in lower courts.

In the past two years, Western nations have seen the new Myanmar president, Thein Sein, usher in a number of reforms, such as allowing an opposition leader, who has spent much of the past 15 years under house arrest, into the Parliament; the release of several hundred political prisoners; and the relaxing of censorship laws, leading to massive rollbacks of international sanctions.?

However, activists are quick to point out that Myanmar has a long way to go and cite the unrest in the Rakhine state in the west as perhaps as big a test for Myanmar's media as it is for its government. Though media laws have been relaxed, and the government has promised further loosening of restrictions, news media reporting on politics or sensitive subjects like ethnic unrest are still subject to censorship, as shown by the court cases against the weekly journal The Snapshot, and another weekly publication, the Modern.

?Until now, the government has been relaxing its abusive control of the media but, as it does not know how to assist the media in the new, rapidly emerging political and economic environment ? and has initiated at least three prosecutions since the start of the year,? Reporters Without Borders said in a recent statement.

Ethnic and sectarian violence that left more than 60 dead broke out in Rakhine state last month after news spread that a Buddhist woman was raped and killed by three ethnic Rohingya Muslims.

State newspapers highlighted the ethnicity and religion of both the rape and murder victim and the suspects, who were later convicted, using an ethnic slur to refer to the men accused of the crime.

The ministry of information, responsible for controlling the press and publishing state sanctioned news, reacted by indefinitely postponing the lifting of the country-wide practice of pre-screening news copy, initially planned for June 30. It claimed private media had incited violence.

The government accused Myat Khaing, editor of Snapshot, of defamation with the intent of inciting violence for publishing an image of the victim's corpse. A conviction carries a sentence of up to seven years.

?We are facing unjust British laws,? Mr. Myat Khaing?s lawyer told reporters outside the court last week. ?The reports in question simply repeated information that had already appeared in state media and on the Internet, and appeared after demonstrations had already occurred.?

The case is scheduled to continue next week, but cound drag on for several months, as delays are typical of the Myanmar court system. The journal is is suspended from publication.

?Conflict in Rakhine state has shone a harsh light on the sensitivity of the media environment and the very fragile nature of the newly recovered, but partial media freedom,? said Reporters Without Borders in a statement.

Myanmar's judiciary still lacks independence, and enforces antiquated and confusing laws drafted in the colonial era that have been amended and changed by several different military governments to support authoritarian rule since 1962.

In an impromptu press conference yesterday, Aung San Suu Kyi stressed the importance of an independent judiciary and rule of law.

?Courts in Myanmar are a tool of the government,? says Nyan Win, legal adviser of Ms. Aung San Suu Kyi?s party, the National League for Democracy, pointing out that many rulings are pre-determined, and rarely based on evidence. He says judges still make decisions based on directives handed down from the military.

United Way cuts funds to area agencies | Williamson County ...

AUSTIN (KXAN) ? Nonprofit organizations in Austin rely heavily on United Way. But now some of those nonprofits are looking for ways to survive after United Way for Greater Austin announced more than a million dollars in cuts.

The news came late last week that nearly two dozen nonprofit agencies will each lose thousands of dollars.

United Way officials said they had no choice but to cut $1.2 million ? money that went to help everything from education and health care to the elderly.

For nonprofit agencies in Austin the search for funds is a priority. Angela Atwood with Family Eldercare was one of 22 agencies hit by a big surprise after United Way decided to cut its donations.

Family Eldercare, which provides services and in-home care for Austin?s rapidly rising senior citizen population, lost $64,000 in funds.

?Our contract with United Way was to begin July 1 and we were notified end of business [day on] July 19,? said Angela Atwood, CEO of Family Eldercare.

It?s money the agency had already spent providing fans for the elderly, who in this Texas heat, are without air conditioning.

?The electric [bill] has gone up so high you can?t afford the a[ir] c[onditioning],? said Rose Naylor, Family Eldercare client.

It is a decision that has affected all kinds of nonprofit organizations.

Capital Idea, an agency that works to stop poverty, lost all $100,000 in funding. So did Meals on Wheels And More , which lost $76,500. Austin Groups for the Elderly lost $72,500. Others like LifeWorks received a reduction, losing $140,000.

United Way says it was forced to make tough decisions.

?Donations to the United Way went down, and so with the campaign down we had to make some decisions that we could no longer sustain funding out of our Rainy Day Fund,? said Lauren Payver, spokeswoman for United Way for Greater Austin.

That fund had already been tapped into covering $3 million in costs. They have also tried other measures like layoffs and pay cuts, but it still was not enough.

?It was a really tough decision, but we

Ethics Training | There are many examples of immoral decisions in ...

Hung up on profit and the urge, which most people unfortunately be able select will you latter, to achieve their immediate objectives.

I say the economy and ethics, disturbing, not because I personally have doubts and must accomplish success living together for a company. I say it because the reality shows that despite the fact that most companies in the business world have their so-called code of ethics, only a few these companies really from her. In the meantime, more and more companies and individuals find excuses for their unethical behavior and according to those that are still less principle in ethics in a difficult situation in the latter group has to compete against those set. Ethical people often lose in their fight against those who would do anything to get what they want. In fact, in todays world has become more the rule than the exception for ethical people in their careers and everyday business not just because they compete with the more common type of people in todays market, namely the unscrupulous or many who would rather you call intelligent.

There are many examples of unethical decisions that are made in the business world. At the business level I can imagine situations, in the company of an a ruinous approach to the competing companies or individuals out of their way, instead of using them in a fair competition to remove is; At the individual level can think I am a situation in a greedy employees is aimed by a competitor and is paid a bribe or a Commission in exchange for confidential information can help the, the competition to pick a business opportunity of the employer. I wonder! When is it become be acceptable, dishonest, smart and downright villain? Why honest people naive as are or more importantly why do they lose their chance of winning against the cunning and ethical? Good business ethics can and should be part of a successful company. Unethical companies can be profitable in the short term, but never really succeed can. A business without ethics is a business without integrity. Such a company can realize immediate profitability but face it definitely long term scheitern. This rule applies to every aspect of our lives. This is not only true, because customers as value-oriented companies, but also deal with, because an an unprincipled business like a rotten House determined to reduce its own in full blown termites to the hands. Simply not have on a solid foundation it can stand in the face of the many storms, with which he is confronted in his lifetime.

So, do you make what the thread to ethics, which weaves the fabric of your company?

Inspire your employees and customers to do, what is right to do 2-promote of your staff, the right, and reward for it. 3 Do not tolerate corruption or unethical behavior in your company, 4-not matter how profitable a partnership or a relationship can be displayed, do not take it if it means that with one, an unethical company or an individual team, 5-Finally keep in mind that fighting whether you win or lose the good fight to win the race, is much more satisfying, independent, than to gain at the expense of someone else.

You go to life you and set a good example, for if these days are all behind you, and youre your grandchildren in your rocking chair tell about your services, will tell not only proud fighting history of your honest life, but will also be teaching them as a honest and righteous life to live.
