Portland Opera holds free chorus rehearsal in Director Park ...

If you like opera choruses -- and who doesn't? -- get to Director Park in downtown Portland Sunday afternoon, Sept. 9. The loud and lusty Portland Opera Chorus will hold forth at its annual outdoor rehearsal.

Opera choruses are among the liveliest music written -- think the "Anvil Chorus" from "Il Trovatore," the enormous swell of voices in "Aida," the "Brindisi" drinking chorus in "La Traviata."

The rehearsal goes from 3 to 5 p.m., Sept. 9. Director Park is behind the Fox Tower, between S.W. Taylor and Yamhill and 9th and Park.

Interim Assistant Conductor & Chorus Master Michelle Alexander will lead the 65-voice group.

Teambuilding exercises often get a bad rap as a waste of employees? time, but some entrepreneurs are finding value in activities that are tailored to resolve specific challenges in their business.?Designed correctly, teambuilding programs can strengthen unraveling employee relationships, help sustain corporate culture during periods of fast growth, and build morale amid layoffs, human-resource experts say.?

?People have a negative association with teambuilding ? they want to roll their eyes,? says Stella Grizont, founder of Woopaah, a New York firm that develops creative activities to help companies solve HR problems. ?But when we?re playing, we?re automatically in a (more open) state, and you see a different side of a person that you don?t see at your job.?

Here are three entrepreneurs who used innovative and entertaining teambuilding exercises to solve their workplace dilemmas:

Challenge: Despite having only 10 employees, SheFinds Media, creator of New York-based shopping sites, needed to resolve misunderstandings between departments. ?We have an editorial staff and our marketing and sales staff?[the editorial] group is very introverted and the other is extroverted,? explains Michelle Madhok, who started the company in 2004. ?There?s a conflict over personality style.?

Exercise: The staff tried several games to improve relations between the two departments. First, they did a blind taste test of different foods to create trust. Then, they confronted their fears by smashing clay pots on which they had written about what was holding them back both at work and in their personal life. Finally, workers changed into white jumpsuits and threw paint on one another. ?It made people more emotional and vulnerable,? Madhok says. ?When people know each other personally they can be more sympathetic to the plight of others when there?s a problem at work.? The half-day exercise helped employees bond and gain a better understanding of one another?s roles at the company, she says.?

Expert advice: ?When people have a shared experience of a challenge with some intensity, on a biochemical level they are releasing a certain hormone that makes them feel connected,? says Grizont, who set up the creative exercises for SheFinds. ?We create experiences to really help them be vulnerable in a safe space?You see a different side of a person that you don?t see at your job.?

Challenge: When Jim Koch started brewing Sam Adams beer, he wanted employees to feel as passionately as he did about craft brewing and to reflect it in their interactions with customers. ?Many thought beer is differentiated by brand but that it all tasted the same,? Koch says.

Exercise: To educate employees in an entertaining way, as well as bring them together as a team, Koch came up with Beer Jeopardy, an annual game where roughly half of the 850 employees compete against one another to test their beer IQ. All departments compete, but employees in the brewery play a tougher version of the quiz game separately. In addition to answering trivia questions, employees must do blind taste tests to identify different brews. Top prizes include hop-buying trips abroad and a visit to Oktoberfest in Munich. The game ?has a way of knitting us together,? Koch says.

Expert advice: A creative approach works well when trying to teach company and industry knowledge, says Aneil Mishra, managing partner at Total Trust Coaching and Consulting, a Durham, N.C., firm that provides team development programs. ?Games and creative exercises such as this are more likely to be retained by employees than rote memorization.?

Challenge: After John Mulliken launched home d?cor website, Joss and Main, the staff grew from 3 to 75 employees in a little over a year. Employees who once interacted with the entire staff now had contact only with their own departments and received less individual attention, Mulliken says. ?People started to get snippy with each other. You could see it was going to be a stressful situation.?

Exercise: To help employees get to know each other on a personal level and retain the company?s cohesive culture, Mulliken introduced a scavenger hunt type game. Employees write down five little-known facts about themselves in a notebook, and copies of the booklet are passed around to everyone. The idea is to pin the facts to the person. Employees walk around the room and speak with each other to ferret out clues. The game lasts a few hours, and then the correct answers are revealed. ?It?s a mega version of one of those party icebreakers,? Mulliken says. ?We ran it almost like speed-dating,? Mulliken says. ?It worked phenomenally well, and we?ve continued to do it every couple of months.??

Expert advice: This kind of exercise can help workers get to know each other, Mishra says. But it?s best to ask employees to mention favorite hobbies, travel spots or other general information. ?One risk of this company?s approach is that some of the personal information that could be shared could be quite sensitive,? Mishra says.

While that concern undoubtedly won?t give rise to a player walkout, it?s somewhat surprising that the increasingly-litigious NFLPA hasn?t taken some type of legal action aimed at forcing the league to fix this.

Players generally have not affirmatively been speaking out.? The Times article from Sam Borden collects sound bites from various players who expressed concern in response to questions from the media.? Borden properly balanced things out with the league?s sound bites about the replacements doing a ?credible? job, with some refreshing candor.

?We will not come out and say they are without their warts, but we will say that we?ve seen improvement every week,? NFL V.P. of football operations Greg Anderson told the Times.? ?At the end of it, we are very confident that this group of current officials will be credible.?

Observers of the game generally are less confident.? If we assume that the NFL has hired the best of the best officials, the NFL necessarily will be using something less than the best of the best, if the best of the best are locked out.? Why play Russian Roulette with the safety of the players and the integrity of the game?

Of course, not everyone feels that way.? And it?s spawned what could be the first documented case of Yahoo-on-Yahoo crime.? Says Doug Farrar:? ?[T]he NFL?s replacement officials are turning the nation?s most popular and visible sport into a complete and utter joke.?? Says Jason Cole:? ?The argument that NFL owners are messing with the integrity of the game in their negotiation with the NFL Referees Association is laughable.?

Cole asks, ?When was the last time you went to a game and said, ?Boy, that officiating was great???

It happens roughly as often as anyone goes to a game and says the long-snapping or the holding was great.? The officials are part of the infrastructure that is supposed to exist in the background.? We shouldn?t applaud the officiating.? We shouldn?t notice it all.

The replacement officials are making us notice them, because they are making mistakes not only in the heat of the play but after the whistle is blown.? The stage is simply too big for many of them.? The challenge for the league remains getting them comfortable, quickly.? As folks who are used to maneuvering around smaller, slower players with dozens of fans in the stands, the replacements need to get past the awe that Maximus and company experienced when they walked into the Coliseum for the first time.

Through three weeks, the magnitude of the games continues to invade the brains of folks who should be able to get the spot right and mark of penalties correctly and not call a touchback on a punt when the ball clearly was downed in the field of play.? Our point continues to be that, regardless of who?s being unreasonable in the negotiations, the stewards of the game need to work this out.

That includes the locked-out officials.? If they truly care about the game, they?ll find a way bridge the divide.? And if the best offer the NFL has made ultimately isn?t good enough, they can always find another hobby for which they receive a ton of money.

Well, maybe they can?t.

Networks prepare to juggle politics, weather

NEW YORK (AP) ? Television networks began juggling two major stories on Monday, still wondering whether Tropical Storm Isaac will cause them to divert a large amount of attention from the Republican national convention in Tampa.

Anderson Cooper of CNN and Shepard Smith of Fox News Channel were shifted by their networks from Tampa to New Orleans, where the storm appeared headed. It's an odd rerun for both of them: four years ago they left a GOP convention to head to the gulf region ahead of Hurricane Gustav. MSNBC was sending Tamron Hall and Lester Holt to New Orleans in advance of Isaac, and Soledad O'Brien was joining Cooper for CNN.

The major broadcast networks haven't shifted resources yet. Even before the Republicans chose to cancel the first night of the convention on Monday and compress the action into three days, ABC, CBS and NBC had not planned on broadcasting from Tampa on Monday night. Each has scheduled an hour of convention coverage over the next three nights.

"We continue to watch the storm closely and we will have correspondent coverage throughout the region," said Ingrid Ciprian-Matthews, vice president of CBS News. "We will reposition some of our resources as necessary."

Brian Williams of NBC News has taken an intense interest in the New Orleans area since Hurricane Katrina seven years ago, but there are no immediate plans for him to switch cities. NBC's coverage is augmented through its partnership with The Weather Channel, also owned by the Comcast Corp.

The cancellation of Monday's convention activities due to Isaac already forced schedule changes upon television networks. Fox News Channel is reverting to its regular prime-time schedule. CNN is rerunning a documentary on Republican Mitt Romney that first aired Sunday night. PBS had three hours of convention coverage scheduled for Monday night, but instead shifted to entertainment programming.

Throughout Monday, CNN mixed coverage of the storm with political stories from Tampa. Even when its correspondents were talking politics, the lower portion of the network's screen flashed updates on the path and wind speed of Isaac. The network has plenty of experience following multiple stories, said Sam Feist, CNN political director.

"This is CNN," Feist said. "We can walk and chew gum at the same time."

The uncertainty about the storm's path and strength made for uncertainty among Republicans, too.

"This is a difficult set of circumstances for the Republicans," said Fox's Smith, "because as this storm comes through it's going to be fighting for TV time, and newspaper headline time and water cooler talk time. The Republicans had hoped they would be able to have all of the attention of themselves for the next few days and it would appear that Isaac has thrown a wrench in that."

Networks strive, as best they can, to be fair to both parties in terms of television time around the conventions. Even with the storm, Feist said he expects the Republicans to get as much or more coverage than the Democrats, primarily because of the GOP's original plan to have a four-night convention.

Television didn't even need the convention to start to produce some fireworks on Monday. MSNBC's "Morning Joe" featured a bitter confrontation with MSNBC anchor Chris Matthews attacking Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus on Romney campaign tactics, leaving show hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski plainly uncomfortable.
