Hate Mail: I Got This Email Today | Crossing Broad

I got a lot of good responses from the survey yesterday (thank you). Those comments will, as promised, remain anonymous. But (now ex-)reader Josh didn?t bother to fill out the survey and instead sent me an email. I don?t think he likes me, or the fact that I sometimes write in the first-person. I think Josh is being mean to me. This is the email I received from his Hotmail account:

I want my $1.99 back.??I love all things Philly Sports.??I was unfamiliar with Crossing Broad when it appeared as an app ?other people also downloaded? when I downloaded CSN Philly.??I am not sure which is worse about your blog and your writing; the fact that you never have any new insight into any situation and you simply steal information from real journalists and pass it off as your own, or your infatuation with your over inflated self image that you believe you have for this rise to mediocrity within Philly Sports blogs.??Oh lets not forget a third one; that half the crap you attempt to pass off as journalism has absolutely nothing to do with Philly Sports.

You?re like that kid in high school that walks down the hallways thinking he?s the shit oblivious to the fact that everyone else is laughing at him behind his back as soon as he passes them.??You are so transparent and judging by the comments I have read, I am not the only one who feels this way.?Let?s see?..an article that is titled ?I really need a haircut.???Yea we get it, you did an interview with Rhea Hughes and you wanted everyone to know how special you are. Or the story about the Philadelphia Parking Authority.??Could you be anymore transparent???Wow Kyle was interviewed on television?.tell us more Kyle.??If that is the only time you have had an issue with PPA, then you have no right to speak about them. If that wasn?t your only negative experience about PPA, then why did you choose that story???Hmm?.lets see.??You chose it so you could tell everyone you were on tv. Do you think people don?t see right through that? Plus the story you told wasn?t even PPA?s fault.??It was Fox who told you to park there and they should have been responsible.??But again, that really wasn?t what the story was about was it.??It was an opportunity for you to slip in story reminding all of us ?that one time for 5 minutes a long time ago?..you were on tv.???Congrats.??Or lets see, just last week when the Phillies announced their memorial day uniforms you had to be sure to model it for us and then tell us that you would receive a small commission if we clicked the link to buy shirts.??Why don?t you just put the link???You really need to tell people you get a commission for it???I know people who act like that, they are in the early twenties, or perhaps teenagers who don?t realize just how transparent they are being.??How old are you???Are you really that immature??Theres no way you are in your early twenties.

When you aren?t trying to remind us that you are the writer and editor of a mildly successfulPhiladelphia?sports blog, you are writing about things that have nothing to do with?Philadelphiasports.??Yea Ryan Lochte is a douce, we all know.??We don?t need you to tell us and YOUR NOT FUNNY.??Nobody is laughing at your stupid jokes.??Cliff Lee pissing excellence and can you see his curve ?balls???that?s hilarious man.??Most journalists have someone that they try to emulate when they first start off.??I don?t know who you are trying to emulate, if anyone but it?s not working.??Your writing can?t be taken serious and yet its not funny either.??You should stop with the low brow jokes and inuendos and give us some actual news or actual insight.??Everything I find on your blog is stolen from some other website like [redacted shitty website that I don't read] or deadspin.??You then write a few sarcastic sentences and pass it off as your own.??That?s not journalism.

So before you are about to say well ?I should stop reading your blog if I hate it so much???.don?t worry, I have just deleted the app from my phone.??I had the app for about 3 months and every once in awhile there is an article that is actually well written and provides some well thought out insight to something in Phildelphia sports.??The article about the arena lighting for the Sixers.??That was actually insightful.??If you didn?t steal it from someone else then you should give yourself a pat on the back.??You are like the crazy girlfriend who you want to break up with and every time you are about to do it they give just you just enough sanity to make you say?.?well I?ll give it just a few more days and see what happens.???Well I am done giving it anymore days.??Your writing is getting worse and worse.??That was a waste of $1.99.

I just wanted to share that. I am so very transparent sometimes. But I?d be remiss if I didn?t point out the vicious contradiction Josh pulled off in graf three:?You should try to be like other people. You shouldn?t use things written by other people.

I wonder if that includes emails?

?

More transparency: Don?t download that Android app we released last year. It sucks. New IOS and Android apps are coming this year, and they won?t suck.

Blatter praises female candidate for exec. comm.

By GERALD IMRAY

AP Sports Writer

updated 10:30 a.m. ET May 29, 2013

PORT LOUIS, Mauritius (AP) -With world football leaders under pressure to make concrete progress in reform, FIFA President Sepp Blatter took time to praise one of the four women vying to become the body's first permanent female executive committee member.

In his first public speech in Mauritius on Wednesday at the Asian Football Confederation's regional congress, Blatter called Australian candidate Moya Dodd "a good candidate and a good-looking candidate," adding he preferred the term "lady" to female when referring to the new position.

"I can tell you she's good. She's very good. So good luck," Blatter said of Dodd, a former Australia international who is now a lawyer and an AFC vice president.

Dodd will compete against candidates from Burundi, Turks and Caicos Islands and New Zealand at the FIFA Congress for a newly-created four-year term for a woman on the governing body's executive committee, with the winner becoming the first permanent female member.

Dodd said she was not offended by Blatter's view of her.

"I was more focused on his earlier comments that I was a good candidate, a very good candidate," Dodd said. "Knowing him as I do, I certainly took no offense."

The meeting was presided over by newly elected AFC President Sheik Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa, who Blatter also complimented while taking a swipe at the former leader and Blatter's one-time rival for the FIFA leadership, Mohamed bin Hammam.

It was good for the AFC "to get back the full trust and confidence in the leadership," Blatter said.

Paving the way for the direction of the main FIFA Congress, which runs Thursday and Friday, Blatter confirmed in his brief speech before leaving to applause that he would ask FIFA's 209 member countries to defer a decision on introducing age and term limits for senior officials, sending it instead to the 2014 congress for possible debate.

Looking at introducing a maximum age for FIFA positions - including the presidency - and limiting their number of terms were only a small part of FIFA's overall reform process, Blatter said, going against criticism that it's a sign that FIFA is ignoring key reform areas.

"I will ask the congress to postpone this problem and give it time to prepare the proposal," he said. "National associations will have to write if they want or don't want limitations. It is not an important point. It's a small point in this congress and this reform."

FIFA's executive committee had already announced on Tuesday that the age and mandate limits would not be voted on at the congress.

Fast-sinking jellyfish could boost the oceans' uptake of carbon dioxide

May 28, 2013 ? The oceans absorb about 25 percent of the carbon dioxide (CO2) emitted by human activities. Since the industrial revolution, they have taken up about half of the human-made CO2. Billions of planktonic organisms, too tiny to be seen with the naked eye, make this valuable service possible: When carbon dioxide from the atmosphere dissolves in seawater, various species convert it to organic carbon and other organic components during photosynthesis. Jellyfish and pelagic tunicates live on smaller plankton and thus consume organic carbon. When they sink to the seafloor at the end of their life cycles, they take the carbon from the surface waters with them, provide it as food to organisms at the bottom or store it in deep water layers after decomposition. As a result, more CO2 can be dissolved in the oceans. Additionally, calcifying organisms incorporate the inorganic carbon in their calcium carbonate shells directly. They also contribute to the biological pump.

To assess the efficiency of the biological carbon pump, data on sinking velocities of the different species are necessary. Together with colleagues from Germany, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States, Dr. Mario Lebrato, Biological Oceanographer in Prof. Andreas Oschlies' group at GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel, conducted field and laboratory experiments with gelatinous plankton remains. Their latest article in the international magazine "Limnology and Oceanography" describes for the first time the sinking speed of organic remains from jellyfish and pelagic tunicates. Together with a previous article in the same journal that calculated biomass export efficiency for these organisms for the first time, these new data allow robust estimates of global carbon export associated with gelatinous plankton.

For their experiments, the scientists collected different species of scyphozoans (true jellyfish), ctenophores (comb jellies), and thaliaceans (salps) in the Baltic, the Mediterranean, the Atlantic and the Southern Ocean. The sinking process was observed and filmed in large transparent cylinders filled with seawater at OceanLab Bremen by Dr. Pedro de Jesus Mendes. Later the proportion of organic carbon and nitrogen of the dry biomass and biomass weight were measured. The work was supported by the European Project on Ocean Acidification (EPOCA), the Kiel Cluster of Excellence The Future Ocean, the German project on ocean acidification BIOACID (Biological Impacts of Ocean Acidification), and the US National Science Foundation Office for Polar Programs.

"The sinking speed of jelly remains is much, much higher than what we expected, about 500 to 1600 meters per day," Lebrato sums up. "And, what puzzles researchers working on the biological carbon pump: it is higher than that of non-calcifying phytoplankton and marine snow, the main sinking particles and organic carbon sources to the ocean interior." Fast sinking means that the biomass and its constituents reach the deeper ocean layers without major degradation, where microbial decay releases CO2 that can be stored without direct contact with the atmosphere for millennia. Also, fast sinking provides high quality food resources for benthic organisms, which has already been observed actively feeding on jelly remains. On continental shelves and slope areas, biomass may reach the seabed within a day or less.

Within the studied species, scyphozoans had on average the highest carbon content (26.97 percent), followed by thaliaceans (17.20 percent), and ctenophores (1.40 percent). The jelly carbon content is lower on average than that of phytoplankton or marine snow. But their large populations, occupying at times hundreds of square kilometers in the oceans, combined with a high sinking speed, can deliver large carbon quantities to the seabed.

"Our dataset provides an initial overview and comparison for modelers and experimentalists to use in subsequent studies examining the role of jellies in carbon export and the efficiency of the biological pump," Lebrato says. "We are continuously asked, how much organic carbon and CO2 do gelatinous plankton sink worldwide, whether their export capacities are similar to phytoplankton and marine snow. And if an increase of jellyfish in the future will enhance organic carbon export and CO2 sequestration. Until recently, few people believed that jelly organisms could play any major role in the carbon cycle, thus they have been excluded from large biogeochemical research programs. In consequence, the data available up to now are scarce and we are just starting to comprehend the fundamental properties that will allow us to better understand the role of jellyfish and pelagic tunicates in the global carbon cycle."

Wrestling leader confident of IOC reprieve

President of International wrestling federation Nenad Lalovic speaks during a news conference after the extraordinary federation congress, in Moscow, Russia, on Saturday, May 18, 2013. Wrestling's governing body is pinning its hopes of keeping the sport in the Olympics after 2016 on rule changes designed to make matches more exciting and easier to understand. The federation, known by the acronym FILA, is also changing its constitution to include a female vice president and will increase the number of women's weight classes if it remains in the Olympics. (AP) ? As the man leading wrestling's charge to preserve its Olympic status, Nenad Lalovic believes he's done what it takes.

Three months after wrestling was surprisingly dropped from the 2020 Games, Lalovic will present a new-look sport and revamped governing body to the IOC on Wednesday in a bid to keep its Olympic place.

"I'm confident," Lalovic, the new president of international federation FILA, said Tuesday. "A lot of people say to me, 'Oh, you won't face any problem here.' But we'll see. We did everything we could. Nothing else was possible.

"We will continue, no matter what we will be decided here. It's a new sport."

Wrestling is competing against seven other sports for a single opening on the 2020 lineup. The others are a combined baseball-softball bid, karate, roller sports, sport climbing, squash, wakeboarding and the Chinese martial art of wushu.

The federations will make closed-door presentations to the IOC executive board, which will decide which sport or sports to recommend to the IOC general assembly for a final vote Sept. 8 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

The IOC board will likely select three or four finalists. Wrestling, squash and karate have been cited as strong contenders. Men's baseball and women's softball, which have been off the program since the 2008 Beijing Games, have merged into a single federation to improve their chances.

The addition of wrestling to the mix has not gone over well with all the sports, who feel that it is overshadowing the contest and reducing their own chances. If wrestling is reinstated in September, that will defeat the IOC's original goal of bringing in a new sport.

Lalovic, a Serb who replaced Switzerland's Raphael Martinetti as FILA president, isn't concerned about the plight of the other sports.

"They are a little bit surprised," he said. "They had two years to prepare. We had three months. We are here because we were not good enough. They have to think about their sport. We don't think about their sport. We think about our sport, and we prepare ourselves without watching what's going on around us."

Wrestling, a sport with a tradition dating to the ancient Olympics, has gone through a major upheaval since it was dropped by the IOC in February. Lalovic was elected FILA president, women and athletes were brought into decision-making roles, and the sport adopted a series of rule changes designed to make wrestling more fan-friendly and easier to understand.

Among the changes, matches will consist of two 3-minute sessions instead of three 2-minute periods, and scoring will be cumulative instead of the previous best-of-three system.

"We had the strength to change," Lalovic said of his message to the IOC. "We already did and we will continue. We made mistakes in the past, for sure. Now we are looking forward. We don't look back."

Among the countries in which the decision will be watched closely is the United States, where wrestling has a strong Olympic tradition and 300,000 high school students compete in the sport.

"The Olympic Games is the ultimate stamp of legitimacy on your sport," USA Wrestling executive director Rich Bender said in St. Petersburg on Tuesday. "You talk to young wresters all over the world, and they'll say the same thing. What's their goal? Their goal is to be Olympic champion. I'm not sure that's the same with all the other sports."

The issue is also being followed by the three cities bidding to host the 2020 Games ? Istanbul, Madrid and Tokyo. Bid leaders from the three candidates are in St. Petersburg to make presentations Thursday at the SportAccord Convention. Wrestling is particularly popular in Turkey and Japan.

"It is important for Turkey because of our success and because it is a national sport," Istanbul bid leader Hasan Arat said Tuesday. "But this is an IOC board decision, which we have to respect. I see lots of changes in wrestling, and I hope wrestling will remain in the games."

Fox Sports has not determined why rope snapped

(AP) ? Fox Sports said on Monday it still had not determined why an overhead TV camera cable snapped during the Coca-Cola 600.

The network says a full investigation is under way and use of the camera is suspended indefinitely. Earlier, NASCAR said it would wait for Fox Sports to conclude its review before deciding if such technology would be used in the future.

Charlotte Motor Speedway said 10 people were injured when part of the drive rope landed in the grandstand; three were taken to hospitals. All were checked out and released soon after.

In a statement, Fox said it was "relieved and thankful to know that the injuries to fans caused then CAMCAT malfunctioned at Charlotte Motor Speedway were minor."

The network again apologized for the disruption.

Several drivers, including then-leader Kyle Busch, reported damage to their cars from the rope.

NASCAR spokesman Kerry Tharp told The Associated Press on Monday that there were no plans to use the system at upcoming races "so we'll have ample time to review."

The network said the system was provided by Austrian company CAMCAT. The rope that failed was certified for a breaking strength of 9,300 pounds and was only bearing less than 900 pounds of force during the race, according to Fox Sports.

The network said it's reviewing with CAMCAT equipment maintenance records, history and installation information and plans to share its findings with NASCAR and Charlotte Motor Speedway.

The network said the system was used successfully at the Daytona 500 and was set up and working at last week's Sprint All-Star race in Charlotte. Fox's final NASCAR telecast this year comes Sunday at Dover International Speedway.

Tharp said NASCAR would let the network determine what went wrong.

"We'll sync up with them on what they have learned this week and go from there," he said.

The network explained how the drive rope moves the camera back and forth and failed near its turn one connection. The camera, it said in a statement, did not come down "because the guide ropes acted as designed."

The rope, Fox said, was made of Dyneema, which it described as "an ultra-strong synthetic that has the same approximate strength of a steel wire with the same diameter." It said the rope was less than a year old, had been factory-tested by its manufacturer and its breaking strength was certified before shipment. The rope was also inspected by CAMCAT when it was received last June.

According to OnlineRopes.com, Dyneema has the "highest strength-to-weight ratio of any manmade material in the world. On weight-to-weight base, it is up to 15 times stronger than steel."

The pictures such cameras provide can be extraordinary. But in this case, the failure brought confusion and chaos to the racers and the fans.

Coca-Cola 600 winner Kevin Harvick thought he was imagining things when he noticed the black rope on the track. He was among the lucky ones who escaped without damage. Busch said he heard a "thunk" when he ran over it and knew he'd have problems.

Busch used a cellphone to take a picture of the mangled metal around his front, right-side wheel so his team could figure out how to repair the damage.

Marcos Ambrose dragged a piece of the rope that got caught up in his car behind him on the track. Mark Martin also reported problems after driving over the rope.

NASCAR red-flagged the race for about 30 minutes and allowed teams back to their pits to get their cars back to race trim.

NASCAR first threw a caution flag before two red flags came out. It eventually allowed the cars to come into the pits, giving crews 15 minutes to work on their cars.

During the break, Busch's crew frantically worked to repair several problems to the right front wheel well. After completing repairs, the crew slapped high-fives as the car rolled back on the track.

Busch remained competitive and was running in the top five at the midpoint of the race. But his night ended in frustration when his engine blew up on lap 253. He said the engine problem was not related the rope damage. He thanked NASCAR for how it handled the unique stoppage.

"I commend NASCAR for taking the initiative and letting us repair our damaged cars from the issue we had," Busch said.

Busch said he never saw the nylon rope.

Ambrose wound up 10th behind Harvick, the second top-10 finish of the year for the Richard Petty Motorsports team.

Kasey Kahne led 156 laps, most of the night, and was second to Harvick. He was as bewildered as everyone else with the TV cable across the track.

"I've never seen anything like it," he said. "I came around turn four, saw it wrapped around Kyle's car, hit mine. I thought I was seeing things."

The camera hung in place over the large painted logo on the grass between the start-finish line and pit road.

Fox broadcaster Chris Myers apologized during the telecast several times to fans, drivers and race teams for the disruption. The network's statement offered "a sincere 'thank you' to the staff at CMS for attending to the injuries and keep us informed on this developing situation."

Busch wasn't sure anybody had seen that happen before and offered a solution: "Maybe now we can get rid of that thing."

China's Ai Weiwei launches musical career with heavy metal "Dumbass" single

BEIJING | Wed May 22, 2013 10:40am IST

BEIJING (Reuters) - Dissident Chinese artist Ai Weiwei made his first foray into the musical world on Wednesday with the release of the top single from his debut album, a song called "Dumbass" that takes inspiration from his detention in 2011.

The video for the heavy metal song, which was directed by Ai with cinematography by acclaimed filmmaker Christopher Doyle, depicts Ai's 81 days in secretive detention in 2011, which sparked an international outcry.

"There was one thing I thought was interesting. When I was detained, there was a paramilitary officer standing there very seriously watching me, and he asked me quietly if I could sing a song," Ai told Reuters at his home in northeastern Beijing.

"At the time I felt extremely frustrated, because I felt terrible, and I realised that in a situation like that, these guards felt just like me, they wanted to hear songs," he said.

The video features Ai having his head and signature beard shaved by his son, and appearing in lipstick and a dress.

The lyrics rail against the authorities, as befit a man who has repeatedly criticized the Chinese government for flouting the rule of law and the rights of citizens, and are also dotted with obscenities.

The album, called "Divina Commedia" after the poem by Italian poet Dante, is a reference to the nickname given Ai by his supporters.

The rest of the six-track heavy metal album is due to be released next month, and contains songs about internet censorship and blind legal activist Chen Guangcheng, whose escape from house arrest last April and subsequent refuge in a U.S. embassy embarrassed China and led to a diplomatic tussle.

Ai said he was not worried about persecution for the album but he is gloomy about the prospects of it being sold in China, and is only distributing it online.

"My songs will certainly be blocked. Not just my songs, but my photograph and my name are all blocked. But there's no problem," he said.

He is also realistic about the aesthetic qualities of his music, but is determined to improve.

"It doesn't sound very good, because I don't have any real skill... And I found that in making music, I have a lot of difficulties," he said. "But I am trying very hard, and I will keep doing it, and I have hope to become someone who sings comparatively well."

Ai has already been in the studio recording his second album, which will be a collection of love songs, he said.

He has no immediate plans to perform live, but hopes one day to perform on Beijing's Tiananmen Square, arguably China's most sensitive location due to its central role in the bloody crackdown on pro-democracy demonstrators in 1989.

"On Tiananmen square one day, maybe. I'm sure it will happen," he said. (Writing by Ben Blanchard, editing by Elaine Lies and Michael Perry)

Solar industry pushes for more use in Ga.

ATLANTA (AP) -- The solar industry in Georgia is pushing a power monopoly to expand its use of solar energy as it plans to meet the state's electricity needs over the next two decades.

State utility regulators heard testimony Tuesday on the energy plans from Southern Co. subsidiary Georgia Power, which must submit new plans every three years. Advocates for the state's solar power industry and tea party leaders fault Georgia Power for not including new forms of solar energy in its planning.

"We think solar is the way to go," Debbie Dooley, a coordinator for the Tea Party Patriots, told the elected members of the Public Service Commission. "The sun is free, it's there. Understand Georgia Power is not being as aggressive on solar power and solar energy as they should be because they're trying to protect their monopoly."

The utility is currently building two nuclear reactors at Plant Vogtle, southeast of Augusta. It also is retiring 15 fossil fuel plants viewed as economically obsolete, in some cases because it would be too expensive to equip them to comply with more stringent environmental rules. After rolling out a new program, Georgia Power officials expect they will have agreements to buy 270 megawatts of solar energy in the state.

But the electric utility remains cautious on a more widespread use of renewable energy, an attitude that extends to the company's top leaders. Southern Co. CEO Tom Fanning has repeatedly said he views renewable energy as a niche energy source, not a main source.

A consultant for the Georgia Solar Energy Industries Association, Karl Rabago, said traditional utilities historically underestimate the value of solar power systems. In Georgia, electric monopolies are guaranteed a profit under law when they spend money to build, maintain and run the infrastructure that creates electricity. A significant expansion of solar power could threaten that business model.

"These projects, if successful, tend to maximize profits at the expense of the lowest cost for customers," Rabago said in written testimony, referring to traditional power plants.

While the utility does use solar energy, its programs are limited.

"Despite the economic benefit, the company's plan apparently proposes to cap renewables at current levels ? which are very small," Rabago said.

Robert Green, the president and CEO of Georgia Solar Utilities, which tried unsuccessfully to start a solar utility, asked regulators to force Georgia Power to add 500 megawatts of solar capacity to its system.

Georgia Power's plan, "which proposes no new solar capacity for the next 20 years, harms ratepayers and the people of Georgia by ignoring the new realities of solar energy in our state," Green said in written testimony.

Myanmar leader making landmark White House visit

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Former general Thein Sein on Monday becomes the first Myanmar president to be welcomed to the White House in almost 47 years, crowning a dramatic diplomatic rehabilitation for his nation after years of international isolation.

But activists are angry about President Barack Obama hosting Thein Sein, and lawmakers are wary. The Myanmar leader has led the shift from decades of direct military rule, but has stalled on some reform commitments and failed to stop bloody outbursts of ethnic violence.

Thein Sein previously served in a repressive junta, and his meetings at the White House and Congress would have been all-but-impossible before he took the helm of a nominally civilian government in 2011. His name was only deleted from a blacklist barring travel to the U.S. last September.

He arrived in Washington Saturday, six months after Obama made history with an unprecedented U.S. presidential visit to the country also known as Burma. The administration's outreach to Myanmar's generals has provided an important incentive for the military to loosen controls on citizens and reduce dependence on China.

Myanmar has been rewarded by relaxation of tough economic sanctions, and Thein Sein will be addressing U.S. businessmen keen to capitalize on the opening of one of Asia's few untapped markets.

"President Thein Sein's visit underscores President Obama's commitment to supporting and assisting those governments that make the important decision to embrace reform," the White House said in its announcement of Monday's visit.

It will be the first by a Myanmar leader since a September 1966 visit by Ne Win, an independence hero-turned dictator, who began the nation's descent from regional rice bowl to economic basket case. Thein Sein visited New York last September for the U.N. General Assembly but did not come to Washington.

The U.S. last month announced it is considering duty-free access for Myanmar to U.S. markets, and there could be progress Monday toward a bilateral trade and investment framework agreement.

The most significant outcome of Thein Sein's trip could be a symbolic one. Obama is expected to use "Myanmar" ? the country name adopted by the junta in 1989 ? when he meets Thein Sein. However, the U.S. will keep using "Burma" in official documents.

Thein Sein will be accorded the protocol due to a foreign president, yet his Washington welcome will pale next to that granted last September to Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, the opposition leader who met Obama and was presented by Congress with the highest civilian award it can bestow.

Human rights activists and Myanmar campaigners have sharply criticized the administration for inviting Thein Sein, arguing it sends the wrong message and wastes leverage to press for further democratic change. The administration says it is important to signal U.S. support for his reform agenda, likely still opposed by military hardliners.

Ahead of the trip, Myanmar released at least 19 political prisoners in what has become a pattern for amnesties that coincide with high-profile international meetings as a way of highlighting the government's benevolent policies. Right groups say at least 160 political detainees are still held.

The government has permitted the International Committee of the Red Cross access to its notorious prisons for the first time in seven years. But hasn't allowed adequate humanitarian access to conflict zones where tens of thousands have been displaced. Authorities have failed to stop, and may have abetted in some cases, an explosion in communal violence that has killed hundreds and led to segregation of Muslim communities.

The U.S. Campaign for Burma said Thein Sein's trip follows a troubling downward trend in Myanmar, and that "instead of honoring an abusive leader" the U.S. should tie its concessions to conditions.

'Apprentice': Who won the boardroom battle?

Donald Trump sizes up the "All-Star Celebrity Apprentice" finalists while boardroom advisor Joan Rivers looks on.

They started out as teammates on "All-Star Celebrity Apprentice," but on Sunday night, Penn Jillette and Trace Adkins faced off in a final battle for boardroom bragging rights. And the winner is ? a big guy with a ponytail.

But which one?

"I think I delivered the best ice cream, I made the best commercial, I put on the best show, I brought in the biggest celebrities and I raised the most money," Trace told Donald Trump just before the big boss made his call.

Trump just couldn't argue those points, so he named the country crooner the best of the all-star bunch (and awarded his charity, the American Red Cross, $250,000, while sponsor Walgreens kicked in $100,000 more).

As for Jillette, he had a couple of victories of his own. Although he didn't raise as much money as Adkins in the final challenge, his ice cream actually sold more pints when it hit store shelves. If that mini-win wasn't enough, the sponsor then awarded Jillette's charity, Opportunity Village, $100,000.

But there were a few people in the boardroom who didn't win anything on Sunday night -- the fired players who came back to watch the finale showdown. That group included dueling divas Omarosa and La Toya Jackson, who, thankfully, had a Gary Busey buffer between them.

What did you think of the "All-Star Celebrity Apprentice" results?

PFT: Teammate says Titus Young opened up to him

MooreAP

On Monday, the Broncos will practice for the first time as a team since capping a stellar regular season with an epic postseason collapse, thanks to a 70-yard touchdown pass that allowed the Ravens to force overtime.

The throw from Joe Flacco landed in the hands of Jacoby Jones because Denver safety Rahim Moore jumped too soon and flailed clumsily at the ball.? After, of course, Moore allowed Jones to run right past the safety.

But the Broncos are still sticking with Moore.? From coaches to players, Moore has been absolved of responsibility.

?I think he?s over it; I think we?re all over it, you know,? Denver defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio told the Associated Press.? ?I think we all look back and see things that we could have done better.?

Linebacker Von Miller take responsibility for not getting to Flacco before he could launch the desperation pass.

?Rahim made a few key tackles that day. He was all over the place. It was just a football folly,? Miller said. ?I don?t blame Rahim.? I blame me and Elvis [Dumervil]: 70 yards to go, we know they?re going to pass the ball.? That?s why they bring me and Elvis to close the game out and neither of us got to the quarterback.? I took it hard.?

Coach John Fox and executive V.P. of football operations John Elway both believe that Moore?s better days are in front of him.

?Rahim?s focus is on getting better from a year ago,? Fox said. ?And there wasn?t one play.? It was a whole season.? He made great, great progress a year ago from his rookie year and we anticipate him to do that again.? He?s a very talented young man.?

?[H]e made tremendous strides from Year One to Year Two,? executive V.P. of football operations John Elway said.? ?And I think hopefully he makes those same strides.? He really had a good year last year and we want to watch him to continue to grow.? Safety-wise, we feel pretty good.?

But not good enough to resist kicking the tires of Charles Woodson.

While there?s no reason for the Broncos to bail on a second-round pick in the 2011 draft, Moore?s ability to forget after having months to stew will be critical to whether he can continue to play at a high level ? and to keep getting better.

If he does, last year?s gaffe will become a distant memory.? A very bad, awful memory, but distant nonetheless.

Investigators eye fractured rail in Conn. train crash

By Richard Weizel

BRIDGEPORT, Connecticut (Reuters) - A fractured segment of track has been found on the rail line of a Metro-North passenger train from New York that derailed in Connecticut and struck another commuter train, injuring more than 70 people, investigators said on Saturday.

Authorities have ruled out foul play in Friday's collision, which occurred during the evening rush hour between the towns of Bridgeport and Fairfield, about 50 miles northeast of New York City.

Further examination is necessary to determine if track damage found at the site of the accident was a cause or effect of the train wreck, but that stretch of rail line had undergone repair work during the past month, officials said.

"We don't yet know whether the fractured train track caused the accident, or was caused by it," Earl Weener, a board member for the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board, told reporters at a news conference in Bridgeport.

"We do know that the back end of the eastbound train that derailed went over that part of the track where there is a fracture, and that there was repair work done on that stretch of track within the past 30 days," Weener said.

The segment of fractured rail was being sent for analysis.

The accident involved two trains from the Metro-North commuter line that runs between New York City and parts of Connecticut. The wreck occurred when several cars of an eastbound train headed from New York to New Haven, Connecticut, left the track and collided with a train coming in the opposite direction bound for New York's Grand Central Station.

More than 70 passengers and crew members were injured, officials said. Eight remained hospitalized on Saturday, three in critical condition, Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy said.

The collision of the Metro-North trains forced Amtrak to shut down service indefinitely between New York and Boston.

The governor urged commuters who normally use the line to find alternative ways to get to work on Monday.

'FORTUNATE THERE WERE NO DEATHS'

NTSB officials arrived at the scene on Saturday to begin their investigation, which has focused in part on recent construction and repair work in the vicinity.

"The FBI was involved at the beginning, but has determined, as have we, that there was no foul play involved," Weener said.

"Frankly, we still don't know what caused the derailment and collision and will not have any answer to that question any time soon, certainly not while on site investigating," he said.

Malloy said the train cars that derailed were new and "designed to the latest standards" for safety and protection of passengers.

"To the best of our knowledge, it is the first time that a car like this has been involved in this kind of incident, and by all appearances, they responded well," Malloy said.

U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut told the news conference he had come directly from St. Vincent's Medical Center, where some of the passengers and crew were being treated.

He said he was particularly struck by the courage of one conductor hurt in the collision, a woman he identified only as Helen, who despite serious back injuries helped "many of the people off the train."

"Considering the impact, we are very, very fortunate there were no deaths," Blumenthal said.

Metro-North is operated by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, a New York state agency.

The New York-New Haven line is the busiest rail line in America and serves 125,000 commuters a day, said Judd Everhart of the Connecticut Department of Transportation.

'Trek' does $70.6M but falls short of studio hopes

(AP) ? "Star Trek: Into Darkness" has warped its way to a $70.6 million domestic launch from Friday to Sunday, though it's not setting any light-speed records with a debut that's lower than the studio's expectations.

The latest voyage of the starship Enterprise fell short of its predecessor, 2009's "Star Trek," which opened with $75.2 million.

Since premiering Wednesday in huge-screen IMAX theaters and expanding Thursday to general cinemas, "Into Darkness" has pulled in $84.1 million, well below distributor Paramount's initial forecast of $100 million. The film added $40 million overseas, pushing its total to $80.5 million since it began rolling out internationally a week earlier.

The "Star Trek" sequel bumped "Iron Man 3" down to second place after two weekends on top. Robert Downey Jr.'s superhero saga took in $35.2 million domestically to lift its receipts to $337.1 million. Overseas, "Iron Man 3" added $40.2 million, raising its international total to $736.2 million and its worldwide tally to nearly $1.1 billion.

While "Iron Man 3" and "Into Darkness" did well overseas, they were outmatched by the debut of Baz Luhrmann's "The Great Gatsby," which followed its domestic debut a week earlier with a wide rollout internationally. "Gatsby" pulled in $42.1 million overseas, coming in a bit ahead of both "Iron Man 3" and "Into Darkness."

Domestically, "Gatsby" held up well at No. 3 with $23.4 million, lifting its total to $90.2 million.

In today's Hollywood of bigger, better sequels, follow-up films often outdo the box office of their predecessors, as each "Iron Man" sequel has done. While "Into Darkness" earned good reviews and is getting strong word-of-mouth from fans, the film did not quite measure up to the opening weekend of director J.J. Abrams' "Star Trek" reboot from four years ago, at least domestically.

"'Star Trek' remains a fan-boy movie. It doesn't seem to have the same kind of cross-over appeal as say an 'Iron Man' or some of these others," said Paul Dergarabedian, an analyst for box-office tracker Hollywood.com. "It's a very specific brand, but I think the general public would love this movie, because it's such an action movie. But to get a hundred-million-plus opening weekend, unless you're 'Twilight,' you really have to cross over to all audiences."

Paramount points out that overseas business is up in many markets, though, so that worldwide, the sequel is off to a better start.

"Because of the nature of the franchise, because of how many movies have been made and the various forms of the TV shows, I'm not sure that 'Star Trek' goes by the rules of normal sequels. I think each movie stands on its own, because it's a unique franchise," said Don Harris, Paramount's head of distribution. "My goal was always that we grow the franchise. We're clearly seeing by today's numbers that the movie is being embraced on a worldwide basis in a way we've never seen before."

Harris said that domestically, "Into Darkness" finished its first weekend 6 percent ahead of revenues for 2009's "Star Trek," which got a head-start with $4 million in Thursday night previews to give it a $79.2 million haul through the first Sunday.

But "Into Darkness" had a full day of screenings Thursday plus its Wednesday IMAX business. Unlike the first movie, which played only in 2-D, the sequel also had the benefit of 3-D screenings that cost a few dollars more. Yet even with the 3-D upcharge and the earlier debut, it came away with just $4.9 million more than its predecessor through Sunday.

Still, it's a solid starting place for the movie to live long and prosper at theaters, with Paramount hoping "Into Darkness" can surpass the $385 million worldwide total of "Star Trek."

"I think we're well along on that road," Harris said.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

1. "Star Trek: Into Darkness," $70.6 million ($40 million international).

2. "Iron Man 3," $35.2 million ($40.2 million international).

3. "The Great Gatsby," $23.4 million ($42.1 million international)

4. "Pain & Gain," $3.1 million.

5. "The Croods," $2.75 million.

6. "42," $2.73 million.

7. "Oblivion," $2.2 million.

8. "Mud," $2.16 million.

9. "Peeples," $2.15 million.

10. "The Big Wedding," $1.1 million.

Estimated weekend ticket sales at international theaters (excluding the U.S. and Canada) for films distributed overseas by Hollywood studios, according to Rentrak:

1. "The Great Gatsby," $42.1 million.

2. "Iron Man 3," $40.2 million.

3. "Star Trek: Into Darkness," $40 million.

4. "Epic," $14.5 million.

5. "Fast & Furious 6," $13.8 million.

6. "The Croods," $10.6 million.

7. "Evil Dead," $5.6 million.

Twitter partners with NBA to highlight ingame replays, Blake Griffin posterizations

In all honesty, Blake Griffin himself could start a social network that served no purpose outside of featuring his dizzying (and disgusting, if you will) array of dunks, and it'd probably go over quite well. Instead, he -- along with other superstars in the National Basketball Association -- will soon see replays of in-game highlights making waves across Twitter in more official fashion. Hot on the heels of a deal between ESPN and Twitter comes this: a partnership between the NBA and the aforesaid social network that'll get video highlights to the world while the game is still ongoing.

#NBARapidReplay will be the hashtag to watch for as the playoffs progress, and as you'd expect, short advertisements will appear alongside those clips. Twitter's foray into the television universe is hardly a new one, but it's becoming ever more obvious that the company is following the ad dollars into the homes of everyday viewers. Up next? A deal to tweet highlights from the 2014 Masters golf tournament... but only in extremely soft spoken, lowercase, predominantly pompous characters.

Roadside bomb kills 19 in west Baghdad: police, medics

MADRID, May 16 (Reuters) - Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos put in an assured performance in front of the cameras after coach Jose Mourinho failed to appear in Thursday's news conference ahead of the King's Cup final. Better known for his tough tackles, powerful heading ability and nerves of steel when taking penalties, the 27-year-old Spain international appeared in the conference room to represent the club and deftly handled a string of awkward questions. "If I am here it is for a reason. I can also answer questions just like the boss," Ramos said. ...

Jewels stolen in Cannes, Chopard says not for stars

CANNES, France (Reuters) - Chopard jewelry worth $1.4 million intended to adorn movie stars at the Cannes film festival has been stolen, a police source said on Friday, but the company said the value had been exaggerated and the items were not for actresses to use.

According to the source, who declined to be named because he was not authorized to discuss the case with the press, the jewels were in the safe of a room rented by an employee of the luxury jeweler, which is also a Cannes sponsor.

"The jeweler hasn't yet furnished details of what exactly was stolen," the source said.

Later in the day, Chopard said in a statement that the value of the jewels stolen was not as high as had been reported and that they were not "part of the collection destined to be used by actresses" during the festival.

The Cannes film festival, the world's largest, draws thousands of movie stars, industry executives and journalists to the fabled resort on the Mediterranean.

Jewelers and fashion houses use the annual event as a promotional showcase, lending gowns and accessories to celebrities who are photographed on the famed red carpet and at parties along the palm-lined Croisette waterfront.

Since the festival opened on Wednesday, pop star Lana Del Rey and former supermodel Cindy Crawford, among others, have chosen Chopard jewels for their red carpet appearances.

The incident at the Suite Novotel four-star hotel in central Cannes - opposite a municipal police station - took place on the night of Thursday to Friday.

The entire safe was removed from the wall and taken from the room, where someone entered without either forcing the door or using the magnetic key card, the police source said.

The hotel declined to comment.

In an ironic twist, Sofia Coppola's new movie "The Bling Ring", about a gang of celebrity-obsessed teens who break into stars' homes to steal their possessions, premiered at Cannes on Thursday evening.

Cancer, Grief, and Words | Angst in Anxiety - Psych Central Blogs

image_preview?I am not what has happened to me. I am what I choose to become.? ~ Carl Jung

I have been thinking a lot about cancer these days. Almost half my caseload has cancer or I see children who have lost a parent to cancer or spouses with a partner with cancer. It seems like cancer is everywhere. Cancer does affect everyone.

Grief is an intimate process of a uniquely individual design initiated for the purpose of transitioning loss.Loss is everywhere. Just like cancer.

When I work with cancer and those who bravely traverse the terrain of what this means to them I am in wonder of the courage it takes to make this emotional journey. Words help the process, yet words are difficult for people even though this is our main platform of communication. I hear people stumble with words, hold words back, bite their tongues, and express fear of saying too much or too little. I have some suggestions.

Words help us bridge to another. We want honest words well-honed to identify the emotion that is uppermost in our heart. So for the child with a dying father or the wife with a dying husband it is important to say things and to work on any unresolved piece that may exist. It is not that the world will fall apart if one doesn?t step up with truth, but the survivors of a death have years ahead to mull over what was and wasn?t said.

Children need help from the healthy parent (the one who does not have cancer) and the healthy parent needs help from friends, siblings, and other family members. Help that comes in the form of encouragement to go to the truth is important.

I work with so many people who are left with unfinished business following a death. It is as though the cancer that took mother carries on into her children or spouse. It is not cancer, but an emotional cancer.

Cancer that is not treatable or one that is aggressive and terminal produces a state of helplessness. Helplessness is an alarming state for mind, body, and spirit. Studies show a connection between depression and cancer, between stressors and cancer, and between sustained powerlessness and disease or illness.

Words of love, words of connection, words of gratitude and words that evoke hope are all good. Everyone leaves a legacy and even death is filled with a gift. People leave their spirit, their contributions, their love, their strength, their bonds, and hundreds of things behind for the use of others with their passing. These things that are left often come in the form of words. We are all pebbles thrown into a large or small pond with ripples that extend endlessly.

There is power in words. Words have the ability to soothe and mend or to wound and destroy.

Take each word and mold it to fit your most compassionate truth. Find the word that rolls easily from your heart before it is projected outward. Practice how gently you can convey even the most difficult feelings. Words are our creation. Words help us grieve. Words are an intimate part of the grief process.
