Russian Orthodox Church asks for clemency for jailed Pussy Riot rockers if they repent

MOSCOW - The Russian Orthodox Church is asking for clemency for three jailed members of the rock band Pussy Riot if they repent for their "punk prayer" for deliverance from President Vladimir Putin at Moscow's main cathedral.

Sunday's church statement comes a day before the women's first appeal since they were convicted on hooliganism charges and sentenced to two years last month.

The church said that if the women make statements showing "penitence and reconsideration of their action," they "shouldn't be left unnoticed."

Earlier this month, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said that keeping them in prison any longer would be "unproductive" ? a statement that encouraged hopes the appeals court could set them free. But skeptics pointed at the Kremlin's ongoing crackdown on dissent, saying that their release would be unlikely.

Rule of Law Can Rid the World of Poverty | Open Society Foundations

Poverty is on the retreat. Despite the global economic downturn, the World Bank and UN reported this year that the number of people living in extreme poverty has dropped in every region of the world for the first time since record keeping began. Though progress on the UN?s Millennium Development Goals has been uneven, we should be heartened that we have already reached, three years before the target date of 2015, the first of these eight goals?that of halving the number of people still living on less than $1 a day. However, we risk allowing these gains to come undone if we fail to strengthen the rule of law in developing countries.

Without basic legal empowerment, the poor live an uncertain existence, in fear of deprivation, displacement and dispossession. A juvenile is wrongfully detained and loses time in school; village land is damaged by a mining company without compensation; an illiterate widow is denied the inheritance she is entitled to and is forced on to the streets with her children. By what means can individuals and communities protect their rights in daily life?

Tens of millions of people live without a legal form of identity, such as a birth certificate. This identity is the cornerstone of justice. Without it, one may be denied opportunities to overcome poverty, including access to immunisations, school, land deeds and welfare. One of the first MDG 2.0 targets? should be reducing statelessness and providing universal legal identity: the enactment and enforcement of legislation ensuring every citizen has universal access to a documented legal identity and is registered at birth.

But legislation is not enough, which is why the second and third targets should concern awareness and access. In developed countries, even those accused of heinous crimes are apprised of their legal rights, and rightfully so. Yet the vast majority of people living in poverty do not even know their rights. Governments must implement concrete measures, or enable civil society to do so, making sure the poor are fully aware of rights under the law.

The targets must include safeguards and regulations to ensure that everybody, regardless of background or circumstances, has full access to the formal justice system. Special attention should also be given to women, as well as to vulnerable groups such as the landless, slum dwellers, sex workers, pre-trial prisoners and juvenile offenders. In many places, laws exist on paper to protect the vulnerable from exploitation, yet informal norms and institutions hold sway, and all too often, these norms and institutions work against the poor and vulnerable, women especially. Where the formal legal system is itself corrupt, there should also be mechanisms such as alternative dispute resolution, which work to provide justice outside the courts.

These need not be costly solutions. We have already seen how they might work in places such as Bangladesh, where civil society organisations like BRAC have strengthened the legal rights of the poor by training thousands of ?barefoot lawyers? in poor communities.

Events in Tahrir Square and beyond have sparked optimism about a global democratic resurgence. But at the same time, there is fear of instability and lawlessness. Let us not forget that in 2015, 1 billion people will still be living in extreme poverty. A hard road still lies ahead. Strengthening the rule of law is more important than ever. A legally empowered citizenry is both the guarantor and lifeblood of democracy. Poverty will only be defeated when the law works for everyone.

Why Barclays Center? Why Not Nets Center?

140723912 Barclays Center is shown here, still under construction, in March. The arena will be home to the Brooklyn Nets.

A Jay-Z concert tonight will mark the long-awaited, much-ballyhooed opening of Barclays Center, the new home of the Brooklyn Nets. The basketball arena is named for the London-based international financial services company. How does a company get naming rights to a stadium?

It approaches the team that plays there. Professional sports stadiums are usually owned by the municipalities in which they?re built, and one or more teams rent the stadium. The city (or county) and the team work out a contract to determine who gets what revenue from the stadium. In these agreements, it?s almost always the case that the team gets all the revenue from stadium naming rights. (One exception is Sports Authority Field in Denver; the $36 million in revenues from the 2011 naming agreement are split 50/50 between the Denver Broncos and a government body called the Metropolitan Football Stadium District.) Since talks between team owners and corporations seeking naming rights are private, we can?t know exactly how the deals are negotiated, but it seems that the wooing can go in both directions, and terms and conditions of the sponsorship are limited only by the participants? creativity. ?

The amount a company pays for naming rights depends on the city, the terms of the agreement, and the length of the agreement. Barclays agreed to pay $400 million for naming rights of the Nets arena lasting 20 years (a per-year record for most expensive stadium naming deal, tied with the New York Mets? Citi Field). Generally, naming rights to new stadiums are worth more than naming rights to old stadiums, because fans are apt to continue calling re-named stadiums by their old names. (Candlestick Park, the home of the San Francisco 49ers, revertedto its original name after naming rights deals with first 3Com and then Monster expired.)

A few American sports stadiums bore corporate names in the early- to mid-20th century, including Chicago?s Wrigley Field and St. Louis? Busch Stadium. But they were really named for team owners who also happened to own eponymous companies (a chewing-gum company and a brewery, respectively). In the ?60s and ?70s, new stadiums were usually named after individuals or teams, with some exceptions?the New England Patriots? Schaefer Stadium (since replaced by Gillette Stadium) being one of them) being one of them. The corporate naming trend didn?t get going in earnest until the early 1990s, when teams realized that stadium names were an asset they could sell.

Companies are clearly willing to invest money in naming rights, but enough companies have faced trouble after engaging in these deals that some sports fans believe in a stadium-naming curse. (Barclays joined the likes of Enron and American Airlines as a victim of this curse when it was implicated in the Libor scandal this summer.)

The rise of corporate naming rights coincided with a dramatic shift in the proportion of revenues taken in by teams compared to cities. Before the late ?80s and early ?90s, cities would get not only rent money but also a decent share of a stadium?s other revenue streams: concessions, ads, parking, and the like. (Teams usually got to keep ticket revenue.) Today, some teams pay only a nominal amount of rent for the use of stadiums, and they typically keep all the revenue that a stadium nets. Cities are left with tax revenue from these accessory revenue streams (but sometimes even tax money goes to the team). Hypothetically, cities still benefit from the prestige of owning a major-league stadium and from the increase in tourism that stadiums ostensibly bring. In reality, though, stadiums usually cost more than originally planned, and their supposed economic benefits rarely materialize.

Our Expert Picks The Top Five Tech Products of 2012 ? Most ...

MMNPL?s Technology Expert Curtis Silver has more than experience when it comes to technology. Silver has written and worked for Wired.com, Gunnar Optiks, Technorati.com, and Digital Dads (writer of the 2nd best NFL column on the internet). Check out what our expert expects to be the most memorable tech products this year!

1. WiiU ? What needs to be said about the first next generation system to be released by the big three? While Playstation and Xbox are still refining their next devices, Nintendo is first to the game ? just in time for Christmas. With a handheld and portable controller, updating to HD and integrating more social factors, the WiiU is sure to be a huge hit.

2. Nokia Lumia 920 ? This is the last chance for a Windows phone to grab enough market share to keep making Windows phones. The Lumia 920 is probably the sleekest, fastest mobile device that carries the Windows operating system. This is a nice phone. Easy to use, intuitive and streamlined. But is a multitude of colors enough to compete with Android and iOS? You are going to see more of these on the street in the coming months, as people realize that the fair market of operating systems makes for a stronger little guy.

3. iPhone 5 ? I?m not a fan of the iPhone, but certainly of what it represents. While the iPhone is no more spectacular than the Samsung Galaxy III or the Motorola Razr, Apple still is able to not only innovate in their design and operating system, but easily profit while doing so. Love or hate Apple, their contribution to the hipster lifestyle can?t be ignored.

4. Origin PC Eon Laptops ? Origin, a company made up of the former brains behind Alienware, is quickly becoming one of the elite manufacturers of high end gaming computers. Their EON line of gaming laptops include 3D options and amazing graphics and sound. Next time you go to PAX, E3 or CES check out how many gaming rigs are Origin PC?s. The Origin EON is going to bring Origin into the arena dominated by companies like Dell, and eventually push them out. Bottom line: if you are a gamer, you want an Origin.

5. Makerbot Replicator ? An open source 3D printer? Yes please. This represents the future of so many independent industries, from animation to architecture and beyond. While the process still needs some refinement, this printer is the first step in a fairly new technology that is going to redefine how we mold and view the world.

Which do you think will be the most memorable? Let us know you expert opinion!

How to List a Business in a Small Business Phone Book | Internet ...

Get MORE Facebook Fans & Likes

Small business phone books are still widely used today. The small business phone book could be an industry-specific Yellow Pages or the country?s Yellow Pages directory, but there has been a shift towards online directories in the past few years. So, how do you go about entering your business in such a phone book?

In the case of traditional Yellow Pages, all you have to do is call the company responsible for the directory. You could also visit the company?s premises. You will be required to pay for the space and to give the details you want to appear. Note that you will be charged based on the space occupied by your ad. If you want your ad to be more effective, you could include your business?s logo.

An online small business phone book is advantageous over the traditional Yellow Pages since you will pay less. Some small business phone books are free of charge. Listing in small business phone books begins by picking the best local phone provider. You could get tips on the best providers through online communities like discussion forums, through recommendations, and through independent reviews. Once you have established the company you want to work with, create an account with the company.

Once you have created an account, the next step is giving the necessary information. You will be asked to give the full name of your company, the company?s phone number, business categories, the physical address, the opening and closing times, and other information. A good small business phone book will allow you to include a small description of your business and to list services offered.

It is free to post in some small business phone books while you have to pay with others. If you get a phone book where you have to pay, this will be done before listing. Once you have paid, it will take several weeks before your company can be listed in the small business phone book. Going to a directory that does manual review of submissions is advantageous in that people trust these directories more and there is a greater chance that your listing will be optimized for search engines. You will be asked to verify the information to ensure you are a real business.

Note that you are allowed to list cell phone numbers, landlines, VOIP service, and 800 numbers in a small business phone book, provided the lines work. You can enter more than one phone number. It takes sometime before you can start seeing positive results, meaning an improvement in ranking. You can edit the information provided anytime.

New material, graphene, may soon replace silicon for technology industry, experts say

ScienceDaily (Sep. 28, 2012) ? Norwegian researchers are the world's first to develop a method for producing semiconductors from graphene. This finding may revolutionise the technology industry.

The method involves growing semiconductor-nanowires on graphene. To achieve this, researchers "bomb" the graphene surface with gallium atoms and arsenic molecules, thereby creating a network of minute nanowires.

The result is a one-micrometre thick hybrid material which acts as a semiconductor. By comparison, the silicon semiconductors in use today are several hundred times thicker. The semiconductors' ability to conduct electricity may be affected by temperature, light or the addition of other atoms.

Fantastic potential

Graphene is the thinnest material known, and at the same time one of the strongest. It consists of a single layer of carbon atoms and is both pliable and transparent. The material conducts electricity and heat very effectively. And perhaps most importantly, it is very inexpensive to produce.

"Given that it's possible to make semiconductors out of graphene instead of silicon, we can make semiconductor components that are both cheaper and more effective than the ones currently on the market," explains Helge Weman of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). Dr Weman is behind the breakthrough discovery along with Professor Bj?rn-Ove Fimland.

"A material comprising a pliable base that is also transparent opens up a world of opportunities, one we have barely touched the surface of," says Dr Weman. "This may bring about a revolution in the production of solar cells and LED components. Windows in traditional houses could double as solar panels or a TV screen. Mobile phone screens could be wrapped around the wrist like a watch. In short, the potential is tremendous."

The researchers have received assistance in gaining patents and founding a company from NTNU Technology Transfer AS, a collaborative partner to the programme entitled Commercialising R&D Results (FORNY2020) at the Research Council of Norway.

However, the path to these findings started with basic research funded under the Research Council's Clean Energy for the Future Programme (RENERGI) and the now-concluded programme, Nanotechnology and New Materials (NANOMAT), which initiated the findings.

The researchers will now begin to create prototypes directed towards specific areas of application. They have been in contact with giants in the electronics industry such as Samsung and IBM. "There is tremendous interest in producing semiconductors out of graphene, so it shouldn't be difficult to find collaborative partners," Dr Weman adds.

The researchers are hoping to have the new semiconductor hybrid materials on the commercial market in roughly five years.

(AP) ? The NHL canceled the rest of the preseason Thursday, just a day before negotiations were set to resume in an effort to end the lockout.

The league announced its second cancellation of preseason games in a two-sentence statement. NHL owners locked out players Sept. 16 when the collective bargaining agreement expired.

The NHL had already called off all the exhibition games scheduled in September. The regular season is supposed to begin Oct. 11.

The two sides have scheduled talks on Friday in New York, although they are on secondary economic issues as opposed to the core of the dispute, which is how to split more than $3 billion in annual revenue.

"I'll reserve judgment on my sense of 'optimism' (or not) until we see how our meetings unfold," NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said in an email to The Associated Press. "Ultimately, we have to meet and talk to make a deal. But until we make progress and see some compromise from the Union of their economic position, we won't be going anywhere fast.

"We will see."

The NHL and the union last met for formal negotiations Sept. 12, three days before the labor pact that ended the previous lockout ? back in 2005 ? ran out.

Now there is at least a glimmer of optimism as talks are expected to last through the weekend. If a deal isn't reached soon, regular-season games will be the next thing to be called off, and players will begin to miss paychecks.

In the most recent round of talks, both sides exchanged proposals on the core economic issues. The NHL made the last offer that day and said it has been waiting for the NHLPA to make a counteroffer.

"Obviously, we've got to talk before you can get a deal, so I think it's important to get the talks going again," Daly said this week. "But you also have to have something to say. I think it's fair to say we feel like we need to hear from the players' association in a meaningful way because I don't think that they've really moved off their initial proposal, which was made more than a month ago now."

As part of their decision to resume talks, the sides agreed to revisit the secondary issues that will have to be ironed out in the new CBA. Those include, but aren't limited to, grievance procedures, travel, medical care, and pensions and benefits.

"We are pleased the league is willing to come back to the bargaining table, and we look forward to Friday's discussions," NHLPA special counsel Steve Fehr said on Tuesday, when the negotiations were scheduled.

Best Action having every chance of a medal in William Hill Hotbox ...

Best Action having every chance of a medal in William Hill Hotbox Bet Stakes at Newcastle

Best Action?s position on the podium is probably the easiest bet of the day at Newcastle. J. Wright?s charge recently made his presence felt by making a couple of wonderful outings. He is in good rhythm, and has a very good chance in the William Hill Hotbox Bet Stakes, to be held on Wednesday, September 26th.

Even the critics would admit that he has a significant role to play today. He is unlikely to miss a place among top-3, and we expect him to finish on top of the chart. No one can find any holes in his previous two runs here.

After bagging a close triumph, the dashing hound did not rest on his laurels. He continued to run well, and seized the runner-up place in a very tough clash last time.

His two good performances came in the wake of an embarrassing defeat here at the start of this month. It was a shocking loss for the big fellow. The bookies gave him the highest odds of 5 to 2, but he completely failed to live up to the expectations.

As a result, he ended up fourth on the table. Victories are not coming to his way on regular basis, but this will hardly matter today. The son of Rossacredibility is fully pumped, and can secure a surprise win.

Other hounds in the crew are: I Am The Man, Lil Ba, Castle Gale Tim, Corrin Michelle and Mustang Madison. The Grade A2 event will be kicked off at 13:12 GMT. A good cash prize of 127 pounds is reserved for the ultimate hero.

Corrin Michelle has what it takes to become a champion, but needs a slice of luck. I Am The Man may set target for others to aim at. According to our calculations, D. Calvert?s 2-year-old would lead in the beginning. However, one needs to wait and see how he manages things to keep his head in front.

Mustang Madison needs to defy the handicapper, and it would certainly not be an easy task. Lil Ba did the business recently, and would be a player today. On the other hand, it is hard to get over-excited about Castle Gale Tim?s prospects at Newcastle.

Own Ward, Bay View Gallery Night 2012 ? Local Trolley

Cramming activities into the last clement days of the year isn?t too difficult in Milwaukee and no neighborhood rises to the occasion quite like Bay View. There?s the South Shore Farmers Market and The Frolics. There was Pabst Fest and Bay View Bash, Art Beat, that other crap I?m missing, and now Bay View Gallery Night, which kicks off tomorrow night. Yes, a Gallery Night so cool it happens a full month before the rest of the City?s.

On the serrated butter knife?s edge of this madness, Made in Milwaukee and Alchemist Theatre safely press their pointy little teeth into Milwaukee?s penchant for creative to-do?s du jour. Bay View?s abundance of venues and pop-up dioramas basically will allow you to just walk down K K without a plan. But here are a few places and artists to see.

Alchemist Theatre and Bay View Lounge

They co-sponsor the night and will have photography of Shane Gardner on the walls and music of Todd Richards and the Surround Sound Experiment in the ether. What?s coolest about this stop? The Alchemist Theatre has a full out chic/cheeky dive concept lounge rarely open when no show is on stage.

If you?re not sure about theatre, you can at least absorb one of the best social atmospheres Milwaukee has to offer without committing a couple our to stage entertainment. If you like it enough, you can vamp back in for the Alchemist?s upcoming Hollowed Eve themed onstage freak-you out live performance The Alchemist Eye.

Amanda Iglinski at the Hide House

Usually all sorts of craziness goes on at the Hide House like church services and improvised musical shows. Most of that will probably still be going on tomorrow night and among others Amanda Iglinski?s works will perch on the vertical walls as a part of the first floor display. She?s a tremendous pop artist with intriguing vision that melds social commentary to the craft of picking images, motifs and colors to blend.

The Hide House will also have exhibits and B-Boy performances from the TRUE Skool camp, Bay View Arts Guild, Sara Risley, music, art studio open houses and egg rolls from Mamma?s Eggrolls.

Gao Gallery

Resident artist Jenie Gao will open her space to feature artwork of her contemporaries Steph Davies, Laura Macias Barrera, Zina Mussman, Rachel Quirk and live music. Gao Gallery occasionally offers instructional art workshops.

Stop by during Bay View Gallery Night and you?ll be able to screenprint a ready made design on one of your own garments or a T that you can purchase there. Jenie Gao?s star as a fine art purveyor is in full bloom and something to gaze upon for seeing what it looks like to go beyond just having talent in a particular medium.

Shogun Tattoo & Body Piercing

Ink?s abound in this town, why stop now? I see calf tats are in. Shogun Tattoo & Body Piercing will wet their needles publicly for the grand ole? first time, opening on BVGN?s expressive ocean swell. The Mil can?t get enough ink, how can you blame us, most of us live where our bodies are at the moment anyway.

The Rest Are The Best Anyway

If I were to drop a few more names for thirst quenching pit stops let?s jus throw Studio Lounge, Black Bird Bar, Boon and Crockett, Hector?s and Club Giribaldi out there arbitrarily. Bay View Gallery Night?s website has the full listing happenings complete with proper addresses and other vital information. I also hear that the new super brilliant Alterra will have a parking lot extavaganza of sorts to top it all with a mango.

Interview with Author of "BlackJack Domination" | Wall Street Oasis

This is Part One of an interview with Derek Sutta, author of the ebook ?BlackJack Domination? which is a fully comprehensive and interactive guide to learning to count cards. Co-authored by an MIT wizard who has been the main inspiration for several casino films and a blackjack player who has won over $100,000 in blackjack at casinos to date.

Derek has helped run a startup, completed an MBA, worked in strategy consulting and now works in business development.

Tell me a bit about the background of yourself and Open Air Publishing
My background is probably quite typical of what you would see on Wall Street Oasis. I went to a top private university in the US, studied Economics and went on to do strategy consulting. I then helped run a startup before going to Wharton business school.

I got into card counting while I was doing consulting and just fell in love with the mathematics of it. It?s almost entrepreneurial. Quite a traditional path I guess. Currently I?m doing business development alongside authoring. I actually wrote the book while still in business school. I contacted Open Air Publishing just for some friendly advice on the best way to market my book and how the publishing business worked and they loved our content so the whole act of getting published turned out to be quite easy for me.

Why did you decide to take the risk of starting your own company rather than join an existing one?

I was in a startup in 2009 when the economy was pretty bad so things weren't great in terms of being at a big company; the projects weren?t super interesting, the bonuses weren?t great so if there was a time to take the risk, for me personally that was it. It was just great to get something off the ground and felt right.

If you?re not tied down to anything I still think it?s a good time to try and get your own company off the ground but it?s a very personal choice and has to be right for you. It doesn?t make sense for me to do it again right now.

What are some of the main obstacles you have to overcome when working at a startup?

Figuring out what?s most important and figuring out what to do with downtime ? knowing how to prioritize and how to be productive all of the time. New stuff constantly comes up and you?re still working on some of the old stuff and you have to decide how to shift your focus. You don?t have a boss telling you what to do so you have to make all the decisions yourself.

Would you recommend doing an MBA for people looking to start their own business? What about in general?

In general yes, for me it was great. Again it?s a very personal choice and it depends on what you?re trying to achieve. If you don?t have an idea it can be a great way to meet people. If you already have a business plan and know what you want to do, take that money you?d put into business school and just invest it in the company. It really is entirely down to personal circumstance. You?ll find a lot of business people at business school but not very many technical people so you?ll grow your network in one way but find holes in another part of it.

Extreme climate change linked to early animal evolution

ScienceDaily (Sep. 26, 2012) ? An international team of scientists, including geochemists from the University of California, Riverside, has uncovered new evidence linking extreme climate change, oxygen rise, and early animal evolution.

A dramatic rise in atmospheric oxygen levels has long been speculated as the trigger for early animal evolution. While the direct cause-and-effect relationships between animal and environmental evolution remain topics of intense debate, all this research has been hampered by the lack of direct evidence for an oxygen increase coincident with the appearance of the earliest animals -- until now.

In the Sept. 27 issue of the journal Nature, the research team, led by scientists at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, offers the first evidence of a direct link between trends in early animal diversity and shifts in Earth system processes.

The fossil record shows a marked increase in animal and algae fossils roughly 635 million years ago. An analysis of organic-rich rocks from South China points to a sudden spike in oceanic oxygen levels at this time -- in the wake of severe glaciation. The new evidence pre-dates previous estimates of a life-sustaining oxygenation event by more than 50 million years.

"This work provides the first real evidence for a long speculated change in oxygen levels in the aftermath of the most severe climatic event in Earth's history -- one of the so-called 'Snowball Earth' glaciations," said Timothy Lyons, a professor of biogeochemistry at UC Riverside.

The research team analyzed concentrations of trace metals and sulfur isotopes, which are tracers of early oxygen levels, in mudstone collected from the Doushantuo Formation in South China. The team found spikes in concentrations of the trace metals, denoting higher oxygen levels in seawater on a global scale.

"We found levels of molybdenum and vanadium in the Doushantuo Formation mudstones that necessitate that the global ocean was well ventilated. This well-oxygenated ocean was the environmental backdrop for early animal diversification," said Noah Planavsky, a former UCR graduate student in Lyons's lab now at CalTech.

The high element concentrations found in the South China rocks are comparable to modern ocean sediments and point to a substantial oxygen increase in the ocean-atmosphere system around 635 million years ago. According to the researchers, the oxygen rise is likely due to increased organic carbon burial, a result of more nutrient availability following the extreme cold climate of the 'Snowball Earth' glaciation when ice shrouded much of Earth's surface.

Lyons and Planavsky argued in research published earlier in the journal Nature that a nutrient surplus associated with the extensive glaciations may have initiated intense carbon burial and oxygenation. Burial of organic carbon -- from photosynthetic organisms -- in ocean sediments would result in the release of vast amounts of oxygen into the ocean-atmosphere system.

"We are delighted that the new metal data from the South China shale seem to be confirming these hypothesized events," Lyons said.

The joint research was supported by grants from the National Science Foundation, the NASA Exobiology Program, and the National Natural Science Foundation of China. Besides Lyons and Planavsky, the research team includes Swapan K. Sahoo (first author of the research paper) and Ganqing Jiang (principal investigator of the study) of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas; Brian Kendall and Ariel D. Anbar of Arizona State University; Xinqiang Wang and Xiaoying Shi of the China University of Geosciences (Beijing); and UCR alumnus Clint Scott of United States Geological Survey.

Quitting driving: Families key but docs have role

In this photo taken Sept. 24, 2012, Lee Sneller, left, follows his wife Pat Sneller to their car so Pat can drive him to an appointment in Flower Mound, Texas. Families may have to watch for dings in the car and plead with an older driver to give up the keys _ but there's new evidence that doctors could become more of an influence on one of the most wrenching decisions facing a rapidly aging population. A large study from Canada found that when doctors warn patients, and driving authorities, that they may be medically unfit to be on the road, there's a drop in serious crash injuries among those drivers. The study, in Thursday's New England Journal of Medicine, couldn't tell if the improvement was because those patients drove less, or drove more carefully once the doctor pointed out the risk. (AP) ? Families may have to watch for dings in the car and plead with an older driver to give up the keys ? but there's new evidence that doctors could have more of an influence on one of the most wrenching decisions facing a rapidly aging population.

A large study from Canada found that when doctors warn patients, and tell driving authorities, that the older folks may be medically unfit to be on the road, there's a drop in serious crash injuries among those drivers.

The study, in Thursday's New England Journal of Medicine, couldn't tell if the improvement was because those patients drove less, or drove more carefully once the doctors pointed out the risk.

But as the number of older drivers surges, it raises the question of how families and doctors could be working together to determine if and when age-related health problems ? from arthritis to frailty to Alzheimer's disease ? are bad enough to impair driving.

Often, families are making that tough choice between safety and independence on their own.

"It's very scary," said Pat Sneller of Flower Mound, Texas, who talked her husband, Lee, into quitting about a year after he was diagnosed with early-stage Alzheimer's disease.

The couple had recently moved from California, one of the few U.S. states that require doctors to report drivers with worrisome health conditions to licensing authorities. Pat Sneller was stunned to learn Texas doesn't require that doctor involvement, and health workers advised her to ride with her husband and judge his abilities for herself.

Eventually her husband called home in a panic, lost while driving in unfamiliar Dallas for volunteer work. A long scrape on the car that he couldn't explain was the final straw. In 2010, she persuaded him to quit driving, although the now-72-year-old's license remains good until 2014.

"He still says occasionally, 'I can still drive, you know,'" Pat Sneller said.

By one U.S. estimate, about 600,000 older drivers a year quit because of health conditions. The problem: There are no clear-cut guidelines to tell who really needs to ? and given the lack of transportation options in much of the country, quitting too soon can be detrimental for someone who might have functioned well for several more years.

It's never an easy discussion.

"It did not go over so well," Benjamin Benson recalls of the time when his sons told the 87-year-old they feared his reflexes had slowed too much for safe driving.

"I've never had an accident," the Peabody, Mass., man said. His family's response: "Well, do you want to wait for the first one?"

The retired accountant wasn't ready to quit then, but he quietly began to analyze what would happen to him and his wife, who doesn't drive, if he did.

His longtime doctor wouldn't advise one way or the other. So over a few months, the couple tried online grocery shopping. They took a taxi to the dentist, not cheap at $38 round-trip. But Benson calculated that maintaining and insuring the car was expensive, too, when he drove only 3,000 miles a year.

A few weeks ago, Benson surprised his family by giving away the car, and he says he's faring fine so far.

"Most people in our age group know that it's inevitable and play around with the idea that it's going to come and the only question is when," Benson said. "I didn't want to be pushed into it."

Unlike in most of the U.S., doctors in much of Canada are supposed to report to licensing authorities patients with certain health conditions that may impair driving. Ontario in 2006 began paying doctors a small fee to further encourage that step ? and researchers used the payments to track 100,075 patients who received those warnings between April of that year and December 2009 (out of the province's more than 9 million licensed drivers).

They compared the group's overall rate of crashes severe enough to send the driver to the emergency room, before the warnings began and afterward, and found a 45 percent drop, reported lead researcher Dr. Donald Redelmeier, a University of Toronto professor. While the study included adult drivers of all ages ? for conditions ranging from epilepsy to sleep disorders, alcoholism to dementia ? most were over age 60. A small percentage of the province's licensed drivers have received warnings, Redelmeier stressed, and licenses are suspended by authorities between 10 percent and 30 percent of the time.

His study highlighted one reason physicians don't like to get involved: About 1 in 5 of the patients who were warned changed doctors. There also was an uptick in reports of depression.

Doctors aren't trained to evaluate driving ability, and the study couldn't tell if some drivers were targeted needlessly, noted Dr. Matthew Rizzo of the University of Iowa. Yet he called the research valuable.

"The message from this paper is that doctors have some wisdom in knowing when to restrict drivers," said Rizzo. His own research shows some cognitive tests might help them better identify who's at risk, such as by measuring "useful field of view," essentially how much your brain gleans at a glance ? important for safety in intersections.

Today, the American Medical Association recommends that doctors administer a few simple tests in advising older drivers. Among them:

?Walk 10 feet down the hallway, turn around and come back. Taking longer than 9 seconds is linked to driving problems.

?On a page with the letters A to L and the numbers 1 to 13 randomly arranged, see how quickly and accurately you draw a line from 1 to A, then to 2, then to B and so on. This so-called trail-making test measures memory, spatial processing and other brain skills, and doing poorly has been linked to at-fault crashes.

?Check if people can turn their necks far enough to change lanes, and have the strength to slam on brakes.

Dr. Gary Kennedy, geriatric psychiatry chief at New York's Montefiore Medical Center, often adds another question: Are his patients allowed to drive their grandchildren?

"If the answer to that is no, that's telling me the people who know the patient best have made a decision that they're not safe," said Kennedy, who offers "to be the bad cop" for families or primary care physicians having trouble delivering the news.

There are no statistics on how often doctors do these kinds of assessment.

"It's this touchy subject that nobody wants to talk about," said Dr. Marian Betz of the University of Colorado, whose surveys show most senior drivers don't think their doctors know whether they drive. She is testing if an advance directive would help get older adults talking with their doctors about how to keep watch on their driving fitness before trouble arises.

More objective measures are needed ? and to help find them, hundreds of older drivers are letting scientists install video cameras, GPS systems and other gadgets in their cars as part of massive studies of everyday driving behavior.

Identifying who needs to quit should be a last resort, said Jon Antin of the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute. He helps oversee data collection for a study that's enrolling 3,000 participants, including hundreds of seniors, in Florida, Indiana, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Washington. The drivers undergo a battery of medical checks before their driving patterns are recorded for 12 to 24 months.

"If you identify people at risk, maybe you can intervene to prolong the safe driving period," agreed Dr. Shawn Marshall of the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute. He helps lead Canada's CanDrive II, a project that's tracking 928 drivers in their 70s for five years, to see how their driving changes as they get older.

For now, advocacy groups like the Alzheimer's Association and AARP offer programs to help families spot signs of driving problems and determine how to talk about it.

"I would like to think that my husband would say, 'You really shouldn't be driving anymore' and I wouldn't get mad at him," said Sally Harris, 75, of Crystal Lake, Ill., who took AARP's "We Need to Talk" program in hopes of broaching the subject with a 90-year-old friend who's having driving problems.

Others turn to driver rehabilitation specialists, occupational therapists who can spend up to four hours evaluating an older driver's vision, memory, cognition and other abilities before giving him a behind-the-wheel driving test. Some doctors and state licensing authorities order those evaluations, but programs can be hard to find, often have waiting lists and cost several hundred dollars that insurance may not cover.

Having a professional involved can keep family relationships intact, said Pam Bartle, a driver rehab specialist at Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital in Wheaton, Ill.

Still, "you could have the sweetest, nicest little old lady and she'll turn on you on a dime if you tell her she can't drive," Bartle said. "It's a desperate thing for people. They can't imagine how they'll manage without driving."

In Home Care: Things To Consider | Adolescent Health Care

As a matter of fact, most elderly people wish to remain home when they age. In this case, they wish to maintain their possessions and routines. Since it is natural that old age leads to lack of ability, some people calls for in home care. What is in home care? It refers to a range of social and health services delivered at one?s home. When it comes to in home care, this service is usually needed at the time an old person wish to stay at home but still need ongoing care which cannot be handled by family members.

There is a misunderstanding concept when we talk about senior homecare. People often think of it as a means of sending senior away to a range of facility. Some people do not want to be busy by taking care of seniors on their own, and this is why they call for in home care service to replace their task. This way is certainly a wrong concept since the nature of home care must be based on dignity. That means you still provide senior with great care and get it done when you have to work to make ends meet.

When it comes to senior homecare or companion care, it is important to still give your attention to the senior living in your home. Just in case the senior is your parent, you should do your own task as a child. In order that you can get reliable home care service for senior, you without a doubt need to consider some important aspects. First, it is necessary to determine your needs by which you can prioritize what you need help most. The next thing to consider is to ask the senior on what type of home care serve he/she want to have.

S.African stocks down as resources firms hammered

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - South African shares ticked lower on Tuesday on concerns over Europe's economic woes and as a spreading string of strikes in the country's mining sector weighed on firms such as Coal of Africa.

Barloworld, the main supplier of Caterpillar products in southern Africa, also fell sharply after the U.S. firm cut its 2015 earnings forecast, citing weakening demand from the mining industry.

The Top-40 share index shed 0.5 percent to 31,776.31, and the wider All-Share lost 0.46 percent to 36,041.48. The mining index shaved off nearly 2 percent.

"Some of the European concerns are coming back to the forefront of people's minds, there's a lot of talk that Spain needs to come through and negotiate a bail out," said Andrew Bryson, a trader at BoE Stockbrokers.

"The initial optimism on the back of the QE (quantitative easing) programme has failed a little bit and people are focused now on what is fundamentally happening on the ground. Some of the optimism is fading a little."

Spain is at the centre of market concerns, with the government due this week to present its draft budget for 2013, outline new structural reforms for the economy and release the results of stress tests on banks.

In South Africa, Coal of Africa's shares sunk 15 percent to 1.92 rand after some of its Mooiplaats colliery workers started a legal strike after rejecting a 22 percent wage increase.

World No. 4 producer Gold Fields also said an illegal strike at its KDC West mine had spread to a separate operation. Its shares ended 1.5 percent lower at 105.43 rand.

Exxaro, African Rainbow and Anglo American also fell by over 1.5 percent after Citigroup cut their ratings to "neutral" from "buy".

Not at resource firms suffered the investor drought. Palabora Mining jumped over 18 percent to 86.49 rand after news that Rio Tinto would be divesting from South Africa's largest copper producer. It was not immediately clear if Rio planned to sell the stake to another investor.

Trade was robust, with 169 million shares changing hands on the bourse. Volume on the All-share has averaged 176 million shares a day over the last three months, according to Thomson Reuters data.

Update: Facebook Confirms No Private Messages Appearing On Timeline. They?re Old Wall Posts.

facebook-securityUpdated. Some Facebook users were alarmed this morning when it appeared that private messages written in 2009 and earlier were showing up on viewable Timelines as messages "Posted by friends." The earliest version of this post included accounts of users who claimed to have had their private messages turned into Timeline posts. TechCrunch has investigated more, and we have found no evidence that the allegedly exposed posts were actually private messages. Our Facebook specialist Josh Constine found that email receipts show allegedly exposed messages were in fact Wall posts, and the posts do not appear in users' Facebook Messages inbox.

UNITED NATIONS (AP) ? President Barack Obama is condemning an anti-Muslim film and the violence in the Middle East that has followed its release, saying there is "no speech that justifies mindless violence."

Obama says in a speech Tuesday before the United Nations General Assembly that "there are no words that excuse the killing of innocent" and "no video that justifies an attack on an embassy."

Obama says the video "is an insult not only to Muslims, but to America as well."

The president was speaking in the aftermath of violent protests in the Middle East and North Africa connected to the release of an anti-Muslim video produced in the United States.

Four Americans were killed in Libya, including U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens, along with more than 50 others in the violence.

Gov. Scott Walker tweets support of unionized NFL refs

(AP)

Like most Green Bay Packers fans, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker woke up Tuesday morning still stinging from a controversial call?made by the NFL's replacement referees?that cost the team a victory over the Seattle Seahawks on "Monday Night Football."

"After catching a few hours of sleep, the #Packers game is still just as painful," Walker tweeted. "#Returntherealrefs."

The Seahawks' 14-12 victory ended on a Hail Mary pass that was intercepted by Packers safety M.D. Jennings but ruled a touchdown by the replacement refs. The play sparked a firestorm of criticism on Twitter, with players, coaches and fans like Walker all weighing in on the debacle.

But the Republican governor's call for the league to end its dispute with the unionized officials is surprising, considering Walker backed anti-union legislation in the state.

[Related: Seahawks win the strangest game in their history on the call that will define replacement refs]

"His tweet has nothing to do with unions and everything to do with a blown call," Cullen Werwie, Walker's press secretary, wrote in an email to Yahoo News.

Some Twitter users disagreed.

"So you PRO-union now?" one wrote in response to Walker's tweet. "Here's what hiring low-wage scabs gets you."

"Really!?! You hypocritical FOOL," wrote another. "Your attack on unions gives businesses the ability to hire unqualified employees."

[Also read: The worst call in NFL history?]

The NFL and the officials union are reportedly battling over about $3 million annually in pension commitments, according to Yahoo Sports.

"The replacement ref experiment is a disaster," Yahoo's Dan Wetzel wrote in a column calling on NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to issue a public apology. "It has overwhelmed the league. It's overshadowed strong play. It's turned Goodell's vaunted shield into a joke."

Our puggle Hektor loves to visit my parents' house. Not only do they live 10 mins from the beach-- providing ample opportunity for running around like a maniac, digging to the center of the earth and eating seaweed-- their living room features this uber comfy?Shag Pouf?from Calypso Home. (Shown in Navy in front of Restoration Hardware's?1950s Leather Copenhagen Chair.) As you can see, Hektor has come to think of it as his?personal pouf.
