AnnaLynne McCord: Makeup-Free on Twitter!

What does AnnaLynne McCord have in common with Lady Gaga, Demi Lovato and Jennifer Love Hewitt?

All have gone all natural on Twitter in the last couple months.

Gaga revealed her all natural look in late March, while Lovato sent out her photo a couple weeks later and then Hewitt forced fans to not focus on her breasts for a change days later.

Now the 90210 star has done the same. What do you think?

Anna McCord Without Makeup

"I woke up this morning and decided I'm over Hollywood's perfection requirement," McCord wrote. To all my girls(and boys) who have ever been embarrassed by their skin! I salute you! I'm not perfect - and that's okay with me!"

You tell 'em, girl!

Ariel Atom-inspired simulator touts world's first 180-degree spherical projector screen (video)

Image

The Ariel Atom is arguably one of the greatest bangs for the buck in terms of sports car performance, so it's no surprise that the automaker has paired up with Motion Simulation to design a particularly special simulator for both hardcore fans as well pro racing drivers and pilots. The TL1 has the world's first 180-degree spherical projection unit (technically, three projector screens acting as one) to give you that advance view of the apex without display bezels getting in the way. Its seat not only adjusts to fit different breeds of cars and aircraft but, if you opt for it, tucks in a motion transducer that will properly jolt you when you hit a bump in the road. What may please extra-serious racing game fans the most is the off-the-shelf nature of the computer needed to drive the TL1 properly: as long as your graphics hardware can handle the extra-wide 5760 x 1200 resolution, any typical Windows XP or Windows 7 desktop will do. The real question is whether your wallet can handle it, as the £11,500 ($18,573) PC-less starting price will make it tempting to buy a real Atom instead.

No Doubt Return With New Album In September

'Ear candy coming your way,' band writes on its website about first album in 11 years.

No Doubt have finally set the release date for their long-in-the-works sixth studio album, the band's first in 11 years. The still-untitled set will drop September 25.

"We are incredibly excited to share the new music with you. Ear candy coming your way," the band wrote on its website. "Thank you all so much for your support over the last 25 years. We're really proud of our new album and we hope you love it as much as we do."

The band began initial work on the album in March 2008, after Gwen Stefani wrapped the tour behind her second solo album, The Sweet Escape. Songwriting on the effort reportedly got off to a slow start because, according to a post from Stefani, she was distracted by her second pregnancy, though she was certain at the time that "this could be the most inspired No Doubt record so far."

Energized by being back together in the studio for the first time since recording 2001's multiplatinum Rock Steady, the band decided to take a break from recording to hit the road for a wildly successful summer 2009 greatest-hits tour.

The band reconvened at bassist Tony Kanal's personal studio in Hollywood after the tour concluded and spent the majority of 2010 writing and carefully polishing several demos. In January 2011, No Doubt guitarist Tom Dupont posted a message letting fans know that the group transitioned to the Santa Monica studio of producer Mark "Spike" Stent, who also worked on Rock Steady, to officially begin tracking the effort.

Last summer, Rolling Stone visited Stent's studio and sampled several songs the band had recorded. Of the 12 tracks announced at that time, the magazine lavished particular affection on "Settle Down," calling it a "party-ready reggae blast," and "One More Summer," which "updates the band's ska-pop sound with pounding dance beats, arena-size guitars and a beyond-catchy chorus."

A month after Rolling Stone's studio visit, in late July 2011, the band teamed up in the studio with Major Lazer, the recording name for hip-hop/dance producers Diplo and Switch (Usher, M.I.A., Beyoncé). The group reportedly recruited the duo for a track titled "Push and Shove."

(Given the time that has elapsed since, it is unknown which, if any, of these songs will make the final cut.)

At the time, drummer Adrian Young told reporters he hoped the new music would be released in the fall of 2011. However, the band chose instead to not rush the album's release and pushed the set to 2012.

In April, the band announced on Twitter that the album was mixed and ready to go. In their announcement of the album's release date over the weekend, No Doubt elaborated that over the next several months, they would "shoot the video and start rehearsing to perform the new songs live for all of you."

Are you excited for No Doubt's new album? Let us know in the comments below!

Japan closes last nuclear reactor

Japan is switching off its last working nuclear reactor, as part of the safety drive since the March 2011 tsunami triggered a meltdown at the Fukushima plant.

The third reactor at the Tomari plant, in Hokkaido prefecture, is shutting down for routine maintenance.

It leaves Japan without energy from atomic power for the first time for more than 40 years.

Until last year, Japan got 30% of its power from nuclear energy.

Hundreds of people marched through Tokyo, waving banners to celebrate what they hope will be the end of nuclear power in Japan.

Power shortages Continue reading the main story

Not a single [nuclear reactor] will be up and running today, and that's because of our efforts?

End Quote Masashi Ishikawa Anti-nuclear campaigner

Since the Fukushima disaster, all the country's reactors have been shut down for routine maintenance. They must withstand tests against earthquakes and tsunamis, and local authorities must give their consent in order for plants to restart.

So far, none have.

Two reactors at the Ohi plant in western Japan have been declared safe. The government says they should be restarted to combat looming shortages.

However, regional authorities would still have to give their approval.

Ministers have warned Japan faces a summer of power shortages.

The BBC's Roland Buerk, in Tokyo, says the government could force the issue, but so far has been reluctant to move against public opinion.

Organisers of the anti-nuclear march in the capital estimated turnout at 5,500.

Demonstrators carried banners shaped as giant fish. The "Koinobori" banners, traditionally the symbol of Children's Day, have been adopted by the anti-nuclear movement.

"There are so many nuclear plants, but not a single one will be up and running today, and that's because of our efforts," campaigner Masashi Ishikawa told the crowd.

Engineers began the process of shutting down the final Tomari reactor, inserting control rods to bring the fission process to an end.

All operations at the plant will have stopped by 14:00 GMT, a spokesman told Associated Press.

World's worst nuclear incidents

  • Level 7: Chernobyl, Ukraine, 1986 - explosion and fire in operational reactor, fallout over thousands of square kilometres, possible 4,000 cancer cases
  • Level 7: Fukushima, 2011 - tsunami and possibly earthquake damage from seismic activity beyond plant design. Long-term effects unknown
  • Level 6: Kyshtym, Russia, 1957 - explosion in waste tank leading to hundreds of cancer cases, contamination over hundreds of square kilometres
  • Level 5: Windscale, UK, 1957 - fire in operating reactor, release of contamination in local area, possible 240 cancer cases
  • Level 5: Three Mile Island, US, 1979 - instrument fault leading to large-scale meltdown, severe damage to reactor core

Japan will then be without nuclear power for the first time since 1970.

Businesses have warned of severe consequences for manufacturing if no nuclear plants are allowed to re-start.

In the meantime, Japan has increased its fossil fuel imports, with electricity companies pressing old power plants into service.

If the country can get through the steamy summer without blackouts, calls to make the nuclear shutdown permanent will get louder, our correspondent says.

The six-reactor Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant was badly damaged by the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami.

Blasts occurred at four of the reactors after the cooling systems went offline, triggering radiation leaks and forcing the evacuation of thousands of people.

A 20km (12m) exclusion zone remains in place around the plant.

Microsoft talks DVD, Media Center support in Windows 8 and why most won't miss it

If you have to issue an explanation to follow up an explanation, then it's pretty safe to say the first one wasn't clear enough, and it's under those circumstances that Microsoft's Steven Sinofsky and the Windows 8 team are returning to the subject of Media Center and DVD movie support. After addressing both a few days ago, the internet backlash was (predictably) quick to finding out that Media Center would be available only as an upgrade to the Pro version of the OS, and that without it Windows wouldn't natively play DVDs. What many may not know however, and the new FAQ points out, is that this is not an entirely new thing -- Windows XP did not have support outside of specialized editions or add-ons, several versions of Vista did not play DVDs and on Windows 7 the Basic and Starter editions lacked the add-on. Of course, for most users this doesn't matter in the least since brand new PCs tend to ship with third party software to play DVDs (or Blu-ray movies where applicable, which no version of Windows has or will natively support). Answering the question we had of what this means for users upgrading their own computers, they'll either need to see if they have existing third party software to play DVDs that is compatible with Windows 8, or acquire Media Center post-upgrade.

Soccer player defects from Cuba, requests asylum in US

Soccer player defects: A Cuban national soccer player disappeared while his team was playing in an Olympic soccer tournament in Tennessee.

Yosmel De Armas is a Cuban soccer player who has defected in order to seek asylum in the United States. While in Nashville, Tennessee last month for an Olympic qualifying soccer tournament, the Cuban midfielder was absent from his national team's final game against Canada, although he played on Saturday?s 4-0 loss to El Salvador.?

When asked why the player skipped the game, the Cuban national coach said De Armas was sick and remained at the team's hotel. However, when the team left Nashville, the promising soccer player did not accompany his teammates on their return trip to the island nation.

Although US officials refused to comment about the player?s whereabouts, it was reported that De Armas was last seen in Miami.?

"We're preparing an asylum application to file with the Department of Homeland Security," attorney Alex Solomiany said, according to Reuters.?

The Miami-based lawyer, who?described his client as "nervous," said De Armas is "alone here"?and that he was on his way to Miami at the time of the game, contrary to the coach's allegations.

A rising number of Cuban athlete defections are explained by several factors: the continuous financial hardship the populace faces in Cuba, the plethora of defection precedents that make the process look easy, and the luring prospects of a better life, all coalesce to urge young athletes to follow this path.?

"This is another case of a Cuban sportsman trying to get a decent life, to try to take control of his own career," Omar Lopez told Reuters.? Lopez is general director of the Cuban American National Foundation, a Miami-based organization of Cuban exiles who seek political change on the island.

Four years ago, seven members of the Cuban under-23 national soccer team also sought political asylum after competing against its US counterpart in Tampa, Florida.?

"Of course, my heart will be in Cuba with my family, but I want to have the freedom to better my life, to play professional soccer, to be the best I can be, and for that we had to make this sacrifice," Yenier Bermudez told the Miami Herald, according to ESPN.

Since the 2002 CONCACAF (Confederation of North, Central America, and Caribbean Association Football) tournament in Los Angeles, a total of 15 Cuban soccer players abandoned their teams and requested political asylum in the United States.

Audi, GM, others unite on 20-minute EV charging standard for green drivers in a rush

20-minute EV charger

Fast-charging an EV isn't new in itself, but deciding on a standard for it is. Which is why we're glad to hear that Audi, BMW, Chrysler, Daimler, Ford, GM, Porsche and Volkswagen have all agreed to a common format for their EV charging ports, the not-very-elegantly-titled DC Fast Charging with a Combined Charging System. Together, the automakers are promising a consistent way to power up a car within 15 to 20 minutes, all without breaking a current Type 1 AC charging implementation. The new format will be demoed at the Electric Vehicle Symposium 26 in Los Angeles starting May 6. Just be aware that your first-generation Focus Electric won't be certain to use the newly universal technology: the first cars to tout the new plug won't be at dealerships until 2013, and the European vehicle association ACEA is only guaranteeing that charging stations on the continent will be using the DC Fast Charging system by 2017. Check after the break for a further look at the port.

Drivers unaware lane splitting is legal | motorcycle, lane, drivers ...

A new study by the Office of Traffic Safety found that nearly half of the drivers they surveyed are still unaware that lane splitting by motorcycle riders is legal in California.

The report showed that only 53 percent of vehicle drivers knew that lane splitting is legal, yet 87 percent of motorcycle riders said they lane split. Seven percent of vehicle drivers admitted to having attempted to prevent it.

A motorcycle makes its way between cars during the early morning commute as it travels the 55 freeway south near the interchange with the 22 freeway in Tustin.

MARK RIGHTMIRE, THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER

The OTS conducted the review in March and interviewed 733 car drivers and 560 motorcyclists.

As to why people weren't aware of the legality, Chris Cochran, spokesman for the OTS, said: "It's likely that, because the law is actually silent about it, it only really comes up regularly within motorcycle circles."

"We usually take note if something is illegal, not when it's legal," Cochran added.

As part of "Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month," law enforcement agencies, including the California Highway Patrol, are reminding motorists through a Caltrans freeway electronic message to "Share the road. Look twice for motorcyclists."

The CHP said motorcycles can travel faster than traffic during congested conditions and are allowed to legally split lanes, meaning they can ride in the unused space between two lines of moving or stationary vehicles. Motorcyclists cannot ride between the yellow lines.

"It's not something we recommend people do, but we understand that people are going to do it because it's legal," said Robert Gladden with the Motorcycle Safety Foundation in a previous interview.

"For a motorcyclist, you need time and space around you," Gladden added. "When you're lane splitting, you decrease your time and space cushion."

Gladden does emphasize that motorists are becoming more distracted and need to focus on the road: "Distracted driving is a growing problem and people are talking on the phone. It's become a larger statistic in freeway crashes and fatalities."

Gladden added that people in cars should give the same priority to driving that riders do when operating a motorcycle.

According to the OTS, motorcycle fatalities have decreased 10 percent from 394 in 2009 to 352 in 2010. The motorcyclist was found at fault in 243 of those crashes in 2010, Cochran said.

As a general guideline, it's risky if motorcyclists share lanes when going above 10 mph or more than the traffic flow, said CHP officer Gabe Montoya.

"It's legal to split lanes but you can't do it if it's going to be in violation of speed limits or if you're going to be going at a speed that's significantly faster than the traffic through which you're trying to move," Montoya said.

"It's unsafe because you're not giving drivers the time to see or acknowledge that you're there, before they make a lane change or other movement," Montoya added.

Adam Yauch's Journey From Cancer Diagnosis To Rock Hall

Beastie Boys rapper kept his fans in the loop over the past three years since he was diagnosed.

Adam Yauch, one of the founding members of the pioneering hip-hop trio the Beastie Boys, died Friday (May 4) at the age of 47 following a long battle with throat cancer. Yauch's death has rattled the music world to its core, with tributes already pouring in from the likes of Justin Timberlake and Russell Simmons to fellow hip-hop pioneers Run-DMC.

Since his 2009 cancer diagnosis, Yauch has stayed away from the public eye, often communicating with concerned fans through email, but during a period of remission, the Grammy-winning rapper stepped forward with his bandmates to release what would be his final album with the Beastie Boys, Hot Sauce Committee Part Two, and even won an MTV Video Music Award for his direction of the Beasties' "Make Some Noise" video.

Though he fought his battle with cancer privately, Yauch, a practicing Buddhist, always maintained a tight connection with the Beasties' fans and continued to work despite the difficult surgeries and treatments he faced. Below, we've taken a look back at the last few years of Yauch's life to showcase the one-of-a-kind music legend's perseverance in the face of such a difficult battle.

Remembering Adam Yauch with Beastie Boys' Essential Hits

July 20, 2009: Yauch announced in a video posted to BeastieBoys.com that he'd been diagnosed with cancer of the parotid gland, a salivary gland in the throat. "The reason we're here talking is because I have some pretty heavy news to say," Yauch said in the video. "About two months ago, I started feeling this little lump in my throat, like what you would feel if you have swollen glands or something like that, and so I didn't really think it was anything. ... They did tests, and I actually have a form of cancer in the gland that's over here, in the parotid gland, and it's also in the lymph node right in that area."

Yauch had surgery to remove the tumor and began radiation that same week. Due to his treatment, the Beastie Boys were forced to cancel their summer touring plans, including headlining gigs at the All Points West Festival and Lollapalooza, in addition to delaying the release of their album Hot Sauce Committee: Part One. The album was finally released in May 2011 under the title Hot Sauce Committee Part Two with a slightly altered track list.

August 5, 2009: In an email to subscribers of the Beastie Boys' newsletter with the subject line "What I did over my summer vacation," Yauch provided fans with an update on his treatment, writing, "So I'm about a week-and-a-half out of surgery now and rapidly recovering from it. ... My neck and jaw are still pretty stiff from the surgery, but it gets better every day. Had the stitches out this past Monday ... so things are moving along."

October 7, 2009: In another email to fans, Yauch wrote about his trip to Dharamsala, India, where he had traveled to see some Tibetan doctors and ended up attending a three-day seminar taught by Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama. "I'm feeling healthy, strong and hopeful that I've beaten this thing, but of course time will tell," Yauch said in the letter.

March 9, 2010: Yauch attended the Independent Spirit Awards and told reporters that while his recovery had been difficult, he was ready to get back to work. "I feel better. It was touch-and-go there for a while, but I am finally getting my energy back," Yauch said. "It was really disappointing to have to hold the record and postpone the tour, but doctor's orders. We may or may not [release the album], depending on how my health is come September. We want to, but we have to play it by ear."

September 28, 2010: The Beastie Boys receive their first nomination to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

January 21, 2011: "Fight for Your Right Revisited," a short film directed by Yauch that picks up immediately after the events of the Beastie Boys' classic "(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party)" video, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. In the film, Elijah Wood plays Ad-Rock, Seth Rogen portrays Mike D and Danny McBride slips on Yauch's classic leather jacket to become MCA. "Revisited" begins with the Beasties crawling out of the trashed apartment while the original '87 tune plays in the background. They head down the stairs and immediately run into the parents of the kids whose party they crashed, played by Susan Sarandon and Stanley Tucci.

April 20, 2011: The video for "Make Some Noise," the lead single from the Beastie Boys' Hot Sauce Committee Part Two, debuted, marking the band's first new musical release since Yauch's cancer diagnosis. The clip was cut from Yauch's "Fight for your Right Revisited" short film.

May 3, 2011: Hot Sauce Committee Part Two hits stores nearly two years after the initial planned release of the project. It's still unclear which songs from the unreleased Part One made it onto the sequel. The album debuted at #2 on the Billboard albums chart.

July 20, 2011: "Make Some Noise" scores MTV Video Music Award nominations for Video of the Year and Best Direction for Yauch. The nominations brought the Beastie Boys' career total VMA noms to eight, which include a Video of the Year nod for the Beasties' 1994 Spike Jonze-directed classic "Sabotage."

August 28, 2011: Yauch wins the VMA for Best Direction for "Make Some Noise." The win is the third for the group, which previously scored a 1999 VMA for Best Hip-Hop Video for "Intergalactic" and the Video Vanguard Award in 1998.

December 17, 2011: It is announced that the Beastie Boys will officially be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

April 14, 2012: The Beastie Boys become the third hip-hop act inducted into the Rock Hall during a ceremony at the Cleveland, Ohio, museum. Though he was unable to attend the ceremony because he was receiving treatment for a recurrence of his cancer, his bandmates paid him a warm tribute and read a letter written by Yauch to the crowd. Fellow inductees the Red Hot Chili Peppers dedicated their performance at the ceremony to Yauch.

Tune in to MTV tonight at 8 p.m. for "Adam Yauch: Remembering a Beastie Boy," an hour-long special hosted by Sway celebrating the life and career of Adam "MCA" Yauch, including his biggest moments and remembrances from his friends and peers. LG Optimus L7 now available in Europe and Asia

Optimus L7

LG Korea has announced the availability of the LG Optimus L7 starting May 2 in "major" European and Asian markets. In case you forgot, the Optimus L7 is the high-end model of the L series phones we saw at Mobile World Congress (check out the hands-on), with a 4.3-inch screen and running a new Android 4.0 based Optimus UI.

There's no mention of which markets in Europe and Asia that LG considers major, so at this point we'll just have to wait for carrier announcements. And any words on a release on this side of the Atlantic haven't been said yet.
